Review of Maryland State/Grand Prix show

Just received a review by Gerry T of my Maryland State/Grand Prix DVDs that I wanted to share with you.

Here’s the teaser clip...

...and the review...

Review of the 2007 Maryland State and Maryland Grand Prix Bodybuilding Events

A Mike Pulcinella Production:  Running Time: Prejudge Disc 45 minutes, Evening Disc 92 minutes

Availability: www.mikepulcinella.com

Held: October 13, 2007

Promoter: Richard Siegelman

Head Judge: Gary Udit

Guest Posers:  IFBB Pros Victor Martinez and Lisa Aukland/NPC national level athlete Chad Ray Martin

Mike Pulcinella, videographer of the Raising the Bar series,  has become the King Midas of bodybuilding video. Everything to which his camera lens is pointed becomes golden filmmaking. Mike has filmed this Maryland dual event with “you are there” virtuosity to create an interesting viewing experience. Events at this level have produced future national competitors and ultimately IFBB professionals. Hopefully, more of these shows will be filmed.

The first disc covers the prejudging for both events (the state show is limited to only Maryland resident athletes, and the Grand Prix is open to all U.S. residents). In each bodybuilding event there is a novice men’s division with lightweight and heavyweight classes, masters men over 40 division, open women’s division, and open men’s division with five classes (light through super heavy).  The prejudge shows each division and class within division compared to each other through quarter turns and mandatory poses. This round is where the judges determine top 5 rankings. This was well filmed, as the viewer sees the competitors from the judges’ perspectives.

The second disc covers the night show, which consists of individual athlete posing routines and divisional class awards. Each of the divisional class winners is compared to the other class winners in prejudge format to determine the overall division award. The overall decision is announced after a posedown among the class winners. Notable among the awards presenters were IFBB Pro Tracey Greenwood and 3 time North American masters heavyweight champion Dave Pulcinella. Also on the night show discs are the guest posing routines.

Most noteworthy was Lisa Aukland, who moved beautifully and looked close to her Olympia condition. This disc gives a good sense of what transpires during an evening show.

An interesting bonus feature was a segment from the 2007 Central NJ Strongwoman show. Four very impressive ladies competed in strongman events, such as keg lifting, etc. Featured was relative newcomer Jalaine Ulsh, who did well in her first event. Definitely an interesting contrast to the bodybuilding.

All in all, an extremely well done venture highly recommended to enthusiasts of bodybuilding.
