Chargers-Patriots blow-by-blow
« on: January 20, 2008, 12:20:57 PM »

Obviously, the Chargers +14 people are loving what they've seen in the first 5 minutes of this 0-0 game, but really, what chance do the Chargers have with a banged-up Gates, one-half Tomlinson, and a somewhat limited Rivers?

They've got to win the turnover battle, but could heavy winds be the equalizer they need to get this down to a one-possession contest in the 4th quarter?

Chargers with the interception in Patriots territory.  That's huge.

And looks like they've picked up a 15-yard foul on the ensuing play.  At this point, they need to be thinking of nothing but a touchdown here.  A FG try isn't good enough.

Chambers has to be aware of his positioning at the back of the endzone, but I do give everyone credit (line, QB, and receiver) on that 3rd-down play...it was a remarkable grab, even though it was out-of-bounds.

That was an ugly FG attempt.  Credit to the Chargers for scoring first, but even more credit to the Patriots defense for doing what they had to do - they held them to 3, which is all Tom asked for.

The Patriot TD drive was nothing but a clinic and most importantly, they showed that they've got a great running game, too.

The Patriots will gladly trade 3 for 7 all day long.  :(

WTF?  I thought it was illegal to throw your leg out to tackle someone.  That's exactly what Vrabel did to Rivers on the interception.

And as expected, the pro-NE announcers said nothing about it.  Hmmm....

Or is that a legal play?  If so, my bad.

Looks like halftime to me :D within one score isn't game over.

I disagreed with the punt on 4th-and-7...to me, that was 4-down territory.

What it comes down to is the fact that the Chargers just didn't take advantage of the numerous opportunities they had.  In the 2nd half, the Patriots just ran all over the Charger defense (which no one really expected) and I was surprised that SD didn't sub in more bodies.

The Patriots didn't play perfect football, but they withstood the Chargers' best shot and came out with a 9-point win.

Based on what I saw today, I don't think either of the NFC teams has a shot to stop 19-0.

Good effort by the Chargers.

I don't think the Pats lose to either GB or NY with two weeks to prepare.  Brady is just too good.
