Best recovery supplement?
« on: January 12, 2008, 07:37:12 PM »
What suplements out there are best for recovery?

More specifically, I want something that would help reduce DOMS in my hamstrings and glutes (after a hard leg workout ofcourse).

tell this DOMS fella to calm down on your glutes and hammies.

seriously though for muscle soreness the best supplement is certainly BCAA's, or imo bulk leucine. leucine in particular has the ability to enhance protein synthesis which would decrease recovery time=less soreness.

DOMS is hard to avoid but i would definitlely look into a product like xtend or some other BCAA with high leucine content.

doms is a result of microtrauma caused by lengthing of the muscle fibers during eccentric portions of the lift(the negative). so if its getting in the way or training seriously you could make your negatives much shorter in duration, which should reduce doms, but this is impractical.

some non supplemental things you can do are contrast showers which are thoguht to increase circulation, but i would just use ice water, or ice as it speeds healing. light strecthing of the muscle after lifting might help but im not convinced. if you do the contrast showers which increase circulation which may remove waste metabolites(probably not the cause of doms) then try taking a swig of a diaphorectic like cayenne pepper before it as it should enhance the whole thing. :D.

so get bcaa's, do some stretching, and try out contrast showers(they have immune and energy benefits as well :D).

had to modify the post, but for general recovery associated with pain etc i would look into cissus quadragularis, it blunts inflammation by inhibiting cox-1 and depletes substance p which is involved in pain. it is close to advil in pain reduction, and actually speeds recovery of soft and hard tissue like bone. it also raises test and i found it great for soreness and increased strength.

Thanks for the reply polesmoker!  :)

You maybe right about the cause of DOMS, last workout I did the goodmorning's slower than usual on the eccentric and I had the worst hamstring soreness I've had in a while .. After last workout I tried all of the non supplemental things like contrast showering and stretching (I stretched a LOT) and it seemed to help ( I cant say for sure 100% since I didn't do 1-legged squats or GM's last workout which really activate the DOMS fella)

I guess I'll have to try the BCAA's now. But I have no joint/bone problems so I dont know why I should take cissus quadragularis?  ???

cissus is good for pain and recovery, but id just try the bcaa's first as theres no need to spend more money then necessary. i liked it alot, probably one of the better supps i tried. load up on the BCAA'S and see how she goes in about a week.

I liked USP Labs Super Cissus much better than the bulk powder. I felt better with the UPS Labs, less impurities than the bulk powder.

Should also say that I drink 3 scoops of Xtend in 1.5 liters of water during my workout! Big, big difference in recovery and fatigue during training.

BUSY B:

i also am drinking xtend....i do it before and after.  Do you think it's actually better to just sip it DURING as opposed to drinking it down right before i go to lift?

Yeah, I like it during because I do the following....

20 min prior to training: Cellucor M5 (creaklyn, NO and caffeine); 1 x AlRi Primed Ultra ((carnosine booster))
During Workout: 3 scoops Xtend
Post Workout: 60 g. Waxy Maize; 40-50 g. Whey and Anti-Oxidants (within five minutes after workout, fill up shaker with water and drink before I leave the gym)

Eat solid meal 1-1 1/2 hrs. later of protein, carb, lower fat

Whatever works best for you bro, but I can tell a huge difference if I forget my Xtend. Just fatigue a bit quicker duing workout.....
If I do not finish the Xtend (1.5 liters) then I dump it in the whey, waxy shake. I say try it for a week and see what you think!
