The Arnold Classic.....
« on: October 16, 2007, 11:23:35 AM »
Ok, been going to the olympia for a few years, and i've just been given the go ahead by the mrs to go to the arnold classic next year.  What i want to know is just how big is the event? one guy i was talking to on a stand at the olympia expo said it dwarfs the O.  Is there as much free stuff, and as much going on as at the O?  ???

My sister recently moved to Columbus and has a decent sized house there . You can bet I will schedule a visit to her on the 1st weekend in March ;D
I am 99%  certain to be going to the ASC this yr and plan on buying my VIP ticket at the end of this month.
I have been before and found the expo to be incredible.
Hope to see you and other getbiggers there.

Part of the reason the Arnold is so enormous is because of all the other sporting events surrounding it.
A.K.A. The Arnold Sports Festival showcases 12 Olympic sports with more than 17,000 athletes and 650 booths in expo.

5k Pump & Run
Active Aging
Armwrestling
Archery
Bench Press
Boxing
Cheerleading &
Dance Team
Cycling
DanceSport
Fencing
Gymnastics
Powerlifting
Strongman
Table Tennis
Weightlifting
Wrestling

Yes, lots of free stuff (although they are getting more stingy these days) if you can stand the crowds.

I've been going to The Arnold and The Olympia for a few years and I find that at The Arnold they are stingy with the 'free stuff' as opposed to The Olympia.

But at least at The Arnold you may get a chance to meet Arnold not one, not twice, but three times.  ;)

the arnold is a great time! however I have been going for the past 9 years and every year I feel it gets worse and worse as far as the free stuff goes.  When I first began going you could literally get a grocery sack full of bars, 1lb protein cans, and all other types of supplements and other free shit.  Last year it was pretty bad as far as that goes- $20 for one day at the expo and the only thing to eat in sight is Subway with pre-made sandwiches for $10 a pop.  That part has gone down hill in a hurry.  The expo as a whole has been solid every year and I have noticed recently more "high profile" celebrities from outside the BB/powerlifting scene have been there signing autographs and what not(damn near every UFC or MMA star as well as random WWE appearances and of course Jenna Jameson).  Overall its a hell of a time and I'm sure will not disappoint.  For the record I have never had the time nor the cash to go to the actual  show-I've only been to the expo and the pre/post parties. See you in Feb!

HA...Why does everyone go on about the free stuff? Is a little pouch of four fat burners or a sample of protein not big enough for one serving going to help? ;) All kidding aside, the Arnold has taken over the Olympia for a while now as the premier show and expo, especially for those of us in the industry...in fact, we don't even bother with the Mr. O in terms of a booth anymore...just the Arnold. I'll be counting the days until I throw my suticase down in the hotel room in Columbus and relax before getting the weekend underway!

Should be worth going.  Aren't Dexter, Wolf and Victor competing in the ASC?  Add Heath and some other great pros and should be a great contest, without the f---ed up Olympia judging that rewards the incumbent, even when they are way off.

Defiantly worth going!! I went for the first time last yr as well as went to the Olympia and the ASC dwarfed the O by a long shot. I couldn't figure out why there was so much room to walk around the expo. They were both defiantly an experience and I would suggest it to anyone. My parents met me out in Vegas for the O and had a blast!! They ask if they could meet me in OH for the ASC this year cause they had so much fun at the expo!

The Arnold is the BEST pro show to attend.  The only issue I have is that its impossible to walk around the Expo on Saturday.  I just go on Friday and Sunday.  Everything is centrally located and its just a great weekend.

Hell, it's impossible to walk around on Friday even... Last year I ditched class early to make it earlier on Friday, and it was still hell.

Parking is also a near impossible feat. Fortunately I had the good sense to just take the bus from campus :)

I wish they'd move it to the Fair Grounds and Expo Center... more parking, more space, less traffic...

I encouraged a patient to attend the ASC with his family.

Bad mistake.

He returned after the 2007 edition and was rather testy with me.

"Why would you encourage me, my wife and two young children to attend something that is akin to the "Porn star championships?"....

I guess the folks involved and milling about did not present an appropriate venue for young children to be around.

Your reply, "To educate them to the world and people around them."

Tell your patient to get out of his self-imposed bubble and stop coddling his kids.  He was probably just offended by the thinly clad muscle men and women.  What does he expect at an expo related to bodybuilding?  A bunch of people running around in business suits?

What would be interesting is to hear what his kids thought about the event.

The O is much better IMO. The expo at the ASC is just not good....WAY to many people that only want free stuff, don't even care about bodybuilding, tons of little kids. Couldn't even watch the woman's Pre-judging judging due to over crowding.

Was fun once but not worth going to twice.

He is old school, like I am.

Compared to the 70's, these events today are, in my opinion, disgusting.

No, not buisness suits.

But could you ever imagine Arnold or Zane running aorund like these assholes do today?

You NEVER saw Arnold wear anything tight. He knew he was the best and didn't have to scream it.

But that is the way it is, now.

How would you like your sister prancing around like these 'fitness' women do?

Be honest. You would not be proud.

Again, its all fine. Just not something I should have endorsed for this particular fellow and his family.

How about, " ... SOME of these events today are, in my opinion, disgusting. " Personally, I thought the Arnold was a lot of fun this year ... minus a few " disgusting " things here and there. Btw, what's disgusting to you may or may not be disgusting to others.  ;)

With all due respect, Arnold was an asshole back then and probably still is today. And, yes, Arnold wore tight clothes. And btw ... all the Bodybuilders I talked to at this past Arnold were friendly as hell ... cool as shit ! I mean, have you ever even talked to these " assholes " ?  ???

But that is the way it is, now.

How would you like your sister prancing around like these 'fitness' women do?

Freedom of choice ... if you don't like it, then don't go. Personally, I thought most of the Women this past year at the Arnold looked absolutely horrible ( my Gf felt the same way as well ).  :-\ But basically like dantelis said ... what do you expect ? Hot Women wearing very little clothing brings both men and women ... which in turn brings money, money, money.

Be honest. You would not be proud.

I don't mean to be rude, but who cares ? I have a Sister ... I may not like the choices she makes, but so what ! It's her life and she can do whatever the hell she damn pleases. Again, freedom of choice.

Again, its all fine. Just not something I should have endorsed for this particular fellow and his family.

I STRONGLY agree with you here !

well as per the free stuff cuz that was the main point here, the arnold expo reps/ vendors didnt give out half of what was going on at the olympia 07. muscle tech/ asylum were making people beg for shirts.

It all a question of numbers.  Even though the Olympia is pushed as the pinnacle of bodybuilding, the Arnold has a much greater audience.  (Anyone have figures?  I bet that it is at least a 2 to 1 if not more than 4 to 1 difference between the Arnold numbers and the Olympia.)  The vendors probably were overwhelmed by the sheer number of people wandering the expo and had to restrict what they could hand out for free.

Its your right to disagree. I appreciate that.

It's all my opinion, is all.

I have worked with many of the top pros.

Have partenered with Mike Katz and Gerry Mastrangelo for close to twenty years judging and promoting shows. Katz shares many of my opinions.
