McCain: US presence in iraq to be ending "soon"
« on: February 25, 2008, 09:40:48 AM »
McCain today in Ohio: US presence in iraq to be ending "soon", and that Iraqi forces will be used to manage the insurgency.

This directly contradicts his statement that we'll be there a hundred years.
He just made the statement, so it's not news yet, no telling if it will be.

but it raises a question...

Is he changing positions on US invovlement in iraq?

If your answer is NO, then explain the differing statements he's made.  Big difference there.  One thing I do like about him is the consistency (except with the tax cuts).  But "soon" was the exact word he used.

PS 240 still predicts an october declaration of "mission accomplished" to make the war a non-issue, or even repub advantage, in the general election.  I've said this for 6 months now and still believe it.

He knows he wont get elected if doesnt turn an about-face.

Hes saying: "I'm tough enough to stay, and Im smart enough to leave"  Hence trying to appeal to conservatives first and dems second.  Smart move but total bullshit as usual.

calmus, why do you hate this guy so much?  Though you disagree with him, his service to our country is undeniable and you just sound ignorant with your insults.  I'd love for you to have traded places with him as a POW during his military service to our country.  Your disrespect is sickening....and I'm not a huge McCain fan either.

McCain said we could have troops there for 100 yrs in responce to a question.  That does not imply any level or #.  We have a large base there now and a major security interest in that region.  I wouldn't doubt the US will keep a large # of troops there at the base no matter who is president.  McCain said that we will win (I don't know what that means either and not defending that statement) and said he would listen to the military commanders as to when its safe to pull troops and at what rate.  He also said he does not want to publically announce a timetable, which is very reasonable.  (That doesn't mean the military strategists don't have a timetable just not one for advanced public notice).

This is not a clear flip flop, people have made their own presumptions based on his comments.

Grow up already. ::)  He made his choices, and I made mine.  You make it seem like "military service" is some kind of sanctifying calling.  I'm not disrespecting him for things that were out of his control, but for things that were and are.

Like
1. Continuing with a career that he knew he had no particular aptitude for/dedication to.  His grades at the NA and subsequent attitude towards his superiors in the Navy bear this out.

2. Being a crass douchebag in general who

3. Never adhered to a position that wasn't convenient for him.

HTH.  ::)

Cockroaches survive too....maybe we should give them fuckin medals too.

They will make the appearance that the war is coming to a close and all is well.  They will of course try to make that.  But they plan on staying in Iraq for a very long time, permanent.  So if he gives the illusion that we're heading out, mission accomplished, he's lying.  Iraq was Bush's, McCain, by his history of statements will want to be his own War President and will attack Iran.  His words not mine.  He sees them as having a nuke about a year from now or so and stopping that is not an option, it's a must so it's mushroom clowds again. ::)

McCain has clarified his statements about Iraq.  He said the majority of troops should be pulled "soon" but there will be a presence of American troops there for decades.  He also said they Iraqi military is expected to fully take over soon.  I don't know what "soon" means as McCain does not like to be publically specific on military strategy...which I understand.  I take this to mean that all the candidates will pull troops but it may be at different rates.

As far as Iran, that is a scary country.  Nevertheless, I certainly hope McCain is being forceful but will not jump to another war unless absolutley unavoidable, which was definitely not the case in Iraq.

McCain knows he has the repub nomination wrapped up.

Now he's trying to gradually CHANGE his position to a more moderate position.  That's deceptive.

When he was against "Bomb the world" Rudy and "We need to double Gitmo" Romney, he needed to yell about 100 years of war to get the nomination.

now, he's suddenly "we'll be done there soon"... to try to win moderates.  it's a position change.

There may be some movement in his position...but it was more people's interpretation of his words IMO.  By saying we could be there 100 yrs, he has maintained that he meant an American base with some troops, not what we have their now.

Either way, the less troops there the better so if its a bit of change in position, I'm still all for it!
