This is an interesting moral conundrum! Here's the story:http://www.boston.com/news/health/articles/2008/03/09/when_science_meets_the_soul/

What do you guys think? I'm a bit undecided whether the doctor had the right to do what he did, but I think PZ Myers makes some very good points: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/03/in_which_i_agree_with_the_jeho.php

loco, Stella, et al., what do you think?

I scanned through the article in the first link.

First it wouldn't be considered a "fetus" once it's born.  When I saw the thread title I wondered if they were going to kidnap and sedate the mother to operate on the baby...in which case I don't think they could get away w/that!

The first problem as I see is the JW's take scripture out of context just like many cults.

The scripture they struggled with was:

Acts 15:29
You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. Farewell.

Their issue was not wanting the child to receive a blood transfusion.

The scripture above taken in context imo means it would do well to avoid eating blood.  The blood part is sandwiched between 2 things they are being told that it is not good for them to eat.

The JW's appear to teach that the parents will lose their salvation if they allow the child to receive a transfusion.  That is not a Christian teaching, nor is it biblical.

"We are saved by grace through faith, and not of works, so that no one can boast." EPH 2:8,9.

Salvation is a free gift...not one we earn by performing or abstaining from certain works.

The parents were obviously relieved to have it taken out of their hands.

Do doctors still take the Hippocratic Oath ???
