The bench press
« on: May 01, 2008, 06:30:08 AM »
Hey guys,as u know iv just started my powerlifting routine, loved it so far.

Im just back flat BB benching after about 2 years, and iv never really done it powerlifting style.
Im curious, after pulling feet back (trying to press thru feet during lift), and arching lower back. Im grabbing the power rings on the bar, and im trying to tuck elbows in as much as i can (which u can only do so much)....is this ok, do i really have to tuck elbows in that much??
Im asking as last night didnt feel that much easier than previous normal 'bodybuilding' style bench pressing.

there are alot of variables with that.  It also depends on if you are going RAW or using a shirt.

your starting a new style. the answer to your question is: Practice, practice, practice. the BB style puts more stress on the pecs to move the weight off the chest, then the front delts work crazy hard throughout the next roughly 8"with some help from the triceps, finally the triceps take over and do most of the work to lockout.
With the powerlifter style of elbows tucked you get more muscles helping to move the weight off the chest: Pecs, front delts, traps, lats and tri's. More muscles helping the front delts during those first 8":lats, traps, tri's. which if you train for the speed and explosion off the chest should give you momentum through the lockout thus helping the tri's to do so.

practice, practice, practice.

Find a real powerlifter IN your gym, or find out where some REAL powerlifters train and go join their gym. There is only so much ANYone can do for you over the internet. Any real tweaking to your form MUST be done in person. Video's don't provide enough information and neither does the typed word.

Thanks nasht5, respect ur views.

Ur right it is new to me this style. Tucked elbows again today but not as much, trying to drive thru feet on evey rep is hard but im working on that to. its hard b/c u concentrate on pressing the weight up but im really trying to drive thru the feet to.

Actually on last single today i find my left elbow wants to go back to regular bench position.Itl come.
