Barack Obama’s campaign is planning to offer Hillary Clinton a Cabinet post or other vital role in shepherding through health care reform if she leaves the Democratic primary race, a British newspaper reported Sunday.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that the Obama campaign is working up a “negotiated surrender” that would amount to Clinton’s rapid departure in exchange for a post as health and human services secretary in an Obama administration or chief Senate sponsor for Obama-backed health care legislation.

Not on the table, according to a Democratic strategist close to the Obama camp, is a position as vice president.

“They will give her the respect she deserves. She will get something to do with health care, a Cabinet post or the chance to lead the legislation through the Senate,” the strategist told the newspaper.

Two other names floated for Cabinet positions were former presidential candidate John Edwards as attorney general and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden for secretary of state.

Clinton continues to fight on for the nomination, with Montana, South Dakota and Puerto Rico wrapping up the final primary season votes this week. While her aides insist she is in it to win it, the numbers are increasingly stacked against her.

Saturday’s decision by the Democratic National Committee’s rules committee to include Michigan and Florida’s delegates under a complicated work-around doesn’t ease the challenge for Clinton to pull out a victory. She would need overwhelming support from the remaining uncommitted superdelegates to surpass him.

The Telegraph reported that the Obama and Clinton camps are already in talks over an endgame, though one strategist told the newspaper that Clinton isn’t ready to negotiate because “she has not surrendered in her own mind yet, and until she does it’s very difficult to have these conversations.”

Edwards and Biden...thats a disaster.  Biden is as loose tempered as McCain.

Agreed, I doubt he'll nominate her as VP.  She has now lost.  I expect a concession by the end of the week.

It will be interesting to watch. I really have no clue what to expect from her.

Part of me can picture her using every trick in the book, trying to go to court over this, and be dragged out the Dem convention in August in a straitjacket.

She would be a good secretary of state.  Despite her flaws, she is essentially tied with Obama and has a ton more experience than him.
