McCain, Obama fail to agree on town halls
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Friday rejected Republican rival John McCain's proposal for 10 joint town-hall appearances, offering instead to have just one on the July 4 holiday.

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said he offered to meet McCain in five joint appearances between now and the Nov. 4 election. But only one of those was a town-hall meeting, plus three traditional debates and an in-depth debate on foreign policy.

The McCain campaign said Obama's offer was to hold the single town hall on Independence Day — which likely would have resulted in less attention while Americans are on holiday. McCain told reporters traveling with him in New Jersey that was "a very disappointing response."

McCain had said the more intimate town-hall format, a give-and-take between a candidate and the audience, would allow real interaction with voters and would be more revealing than formal televised debates. Town halls are also McCain's favorite style of campaigning and would allow him to get free media attention alongside the better-funded Obama.

When a McCain adviser first floated the idea last month, Obama said it was a great idea. But the Illinois senator told reporters Tuesday that it's not realistic to have 10 town halls with all the other campaigning he needs to do after just clinching the Democratic Party's nomination months after McCain wrapped up the GOP nod.

The two campaigns have been unable to work out a deal, other than to agree that the town halls should not be sponsored by media organizations and instead be open to all networks like presidential debates. The two sides on Sunday jointly rejected an offer by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and ABC News to host the first town hall for that reason.

Plouffe tried to place the blame on McCain for refusing to agree, saying five joint appearances "would have been the most of any presidential campaign in the modern era, offering a broad range of formats and representing a historic commitment to openness and transparency."

"It's disappointing that Senator McCain and his campaign decided to decline this proposal. Apparently they would rather contrive a political issue than foster a genuine discussion about the future of our country," Plouffe said.

McCain responded during a brief news conference in Pemberton, N.J., where he traveled for his own town hall.

"I'll let the American people decide which is the preferable proposal," he said. "I want the American people to have the exposure to a number of town hall meetings, not just one."

Neither of them are great at debating IMO.

McCain is quick to stick his foot in, and Obama can be slow off the mark. Obama has improved over time, and I venture he is working it on like a maniac. McCain may look a short feeble old man next to him, I've never seen them together so only can think how striking they will look which will have subtle impact.

mccain doesn't want to do the 3 debates in primetime.

he also refused a july 4 town hall debate with obama.

instead, he wants WEEKLY sit-downs with obama until the dnc convention in august.  problem is, the first town hall event - billed as full of people form all parties - ended up being a 'ticket-only' event yesterday - and tickets only went to local members of RNC.  It was a mccain rally, and they expected Obama to sit thru a rally for 2hours - and it was televised on FOX, mind you :)

as we all know, the election is more about sizzle than steak.

sitting in a big room with all joint chiefs and national leaders during a time of crisis, mccain would be the best choice, sure.  Obama might be intimidated and hasn't seen 1/10 of the shit in DC that Mccain has.

problem is, their TV apeparance does matter, and obama will destroy him on that one.  He'll look like a young, positive change agent, and mccain is a rough 71 years old.  It shouldn't matter, but it does.  Just like obama's skin color shouldn't matter - but to many voters, both black and white - it does.  Some people will choose him ONLY because he's black, and some will choose mccain ONLY because obama is white.  it's just human nature, unfortunately.

symbolism over substance

look at Obama all you see is teleprompters, signs for "change" and him edging the crowds on to cheer

look at McCaim talking about the issues in a town hall meeting - unscripted

2 problems...

1) Bush has hurt the repub party so much that people would vote for a purple dinosaur named Barney, as long as nothing resembling Bush/Cheney gets into the white house.

2) mccain wont separate himself from bush.

Only 2 problems for me. Security, and Economy

McCain seeks it, McCain knows how the real world works

Obama shrugs it off, Obama has not the slighest clue of economic theory

Agree on point #1, majorly. Bush is like King of the Hated and has damaged the repubs beyond all belief.

I do think McCain is trying to subtly distance himself though. He seems to hint at it, saying he will not continue the polices and in other ways. I guess he really can't come out say Bush blows like the dems can

He needs to either do it, or don't do it.  Sh*t, or get off the pot.

Right now, independents see him as Bush2.  Right now, far-right repubs see him as lukewarm Bush.  NEITHER like him, and the 10-point favoribility rating drop in the last month (hardball, 6/12).

It's transparent when he tried to go central.  He won't say "I love Bush", but he wont say "I hate Bush".

Biggest thing is, goes back to what HH6 said. "let the issues do the talking"

McCain 1) Oil - He can change his mind start drilling in Anwar and offshore in Cali, and Rockies lower the price of oil while we transition to bio fules and other types of energy

Obama 1) Oil- He is stuck to his supporters he can't drill, he can't do anything except stay on oil - because the things he wants to do are still the the lab - he is in wonderland, oh he's going to tax the oil companies (great strategy)

McCain 2) Taxes - 15% capital gains tax

Obama 2) Taxes - 28-30% capital gains tax

McCain 3) Illegal aliens - McCain guard border and we may give them a chance to stay if the jobs are needed, if not - no free passes

Obama 3) Illegal aliens- give illegal aliens over 59 Social security benefits  ::)

McCain 4) Were winning the war in Iraq, he voted for the surge and it's working

Obama 4) Voted against the surge and it's working (nice decision making, you just gave up on a war that is winnable)
