Useless spotters
« on: July 23, 2008, 04:05:06 PM »
Are spotters just there for a psychological boost or do they actually do anything?  Time after time we’ve seen guys spotted and when the lifter fails—as in these stills from Bigger, Faster, Stronger—the spotters prove to be utterly useless.

In this particular lift, the weight lifter has 5 guys spotting him, but when he really needs them it’s like they weren’t even there.  WTF?  If you can't count on spotters when you're lifting really heavy weight why have them at all?  ???

that looks like Chad Aichs one of the strongest men in the world and you're right there is no way even 8 guys are catching that weight, it's 1100+ pounds.

Who cares, if that what they want to do for some odd reason, why involve a bunch of other people to lay blame on in case something goes wrong. It's possibly even a dumber activity than forsaking life on drugs and bodybuilding.

They are there to help if they can if the lifter gets in trouble...more times than not they do great jobs.

Spotters are never "useless". Sometimes they mess up. But I always counted on a spotter when I benched anything over my limit.

I was a great spotter but even then one lifter I was spotting dropped the weight through his front teeth before I was able to get control.

We call him "Gummie" now but we're still great friends and he still asks me to spot him on occasions.

Sorry, Gummie!

If your friend is now "Gummie" then you were a useless spotter.  :-[

I'm sure they all come in handy

Someone has to call the hospital while others have to pry the weight off the now mangled lifter (  who collapsed under the weight). ;D.
Then you have to have someone keep exclaiming "oh my god" over and over again in disbelief + someone has to explain what happened to others in the gym alerted by the commotion + someone to post the video online, etc

There you have it - you NEED a crew whenever you attempt superhuman lifts.

the spotters can help a bombed lift, not a dump. it doesn't matter if he has 20 spotters, if a 1200 pound barbell is instantly dropped from his shoulders, it's gonna hit the floor, end of story. now if you've seen the bazillion times where a lifter simply stalled and started moving toward the floor again and got saved by his spotters, you'd realize how useful they are. it's also worth mentioning that often times when an injury happens, spotters prevent it from being even worse.

by the way, that appears to be donnie thompson behind him, the current record holder for biggest total.

Bay, in that instance, I have to agree. But on many different occasions, I did the job I was supposed to do and did it well.

But yea, you are right (as usual) in that one instance.

And "Thank You", Mr MaGoo. I feel somewhat better now.

The one I fuc...d up was definitely a "DUMP".

Dread, it may be humor you submit but you speaketh the truth.

So you post a video (and I am sure their are others) of a group of spotters who didn't help at all or very little.  Can you post some videos of when a spotter(s) does good.  There are many I am sure.  And since I have emceed many powerlifting meets I have seen many times when the spotter(s) do a great job.  And with that kind of weight if the guy walks away then the spotters did a good job.  Cause the weight comes straight down and in most cases by just diverting the bar a little it will push the guy forward and he misses getting hit by the bar coming down.  See the guys who don't know much about powerlifting or say shit about the spotters not doing the job are the guys who have ever seen a meet or know much.  I idea is not to catch the weight or stopping it from hitting the ground.  It is to make sure the lifter doesn't get hurt.  They are there if a lifter needs helps completely the lift after it has been established he is not going to complete the lift on his own.  Sometimes the amount of time is just to short.  Anyway sure their are some shitty spotters but most of the time they are great.
