New Double Decker Jet Offers 1st Class Customers Computers, Lounge - And A Shower At 43,000 FeetMonday July 28, 2008
Photo credit: Martin Rose/Getty ImagesAirlines are cutting back on everything from pillows to peanuts in an effort to squeeze every dollar they can, right? So goes the conventional wisdom.
But if you're willing to pay enough, one airline is offering you not only the frills but downright luxury.
Those who can afford to book a flight on the new A380 Airbus delivered to Emirates Airlines, the official carrier of the United Arab Emirates, will have at least some of the comforts of home. And those who think flying a long distance has to be a hot, sweaty and uncomfortable experience may get a real eye opener - although those eyes may be full of soap suds.
The double decker plane officials delivered to the airline on Monday at Airbus's Hamburg plant, has two bathrooms with showers (top left) that are available to first class passengers. The luxury bonus means the aircraft will have to carry an extra 500 kilograms of water to accommodate the expected demand.
But don't think you can stay under the taps forever. The bathroom in the sky will limit users to just a few minutes under the refreshing hot spray and you won't be able to extend it any longer than that.
"The showers are regulated through a software program that gives people a five-minute shower, which is ample in most cases," warns airline president Tim Clark. A 'traffic light system' will let you know how long you have left. "If you're on amber and your hair's full of shampoo, you want to get moving," he jokes.
The jet also comes with a personal computer terminal in the spacious seats, a TV set to watch movies or videos, and a lounge travellers can use when the seatbelt sign isn't on.
It holds 489 people, including 14 suites, 76 business chairs and the 399 poor souls who are stuck in economy class.
It features mood lighting, including a "starry night" effect for sleeping - although it seems all you'd really have to do is look out the window to achieve the same thing.
As for the price of this bells-and-whistles sky high fly-by? Chances are if you have to ask, you can't really afford it.
The first flight departs from the Emirates to New York on August 1st. And judging by the hype, some may prefer just to stay on the plane.
