Can a girl stop having her period from playing sports?
« on: August 26, 2008, 07:33:19 PM »
So I was having a discussion with some friends (they're all female and I'm a male) and they claimed that if a girl plays any kind of sport she will stop having her period.  It didn't make any sense to me, but it was hard to argue with them because they claimed that it had happened to them.

Girls, is there any truth to this?

Two questions:

How old were they when they claim that happened?

At what bodyfat level were they?

In high school, and the bodyfat of an "average" girl (~20-25%)

As far as I know they will only stop their periods if they do excessive amounts of sports and are at very low levels of bodyfat.
It hasn't helped...

I skipped one period at low bodyfat 10-12% estimate but I don't see 20-25% causing a period to be skipped.

In high school I was in track but never stopped having my period.  Maybe track isn't a sport :-\

You can stop having a period while on birth control.  Instead of the week of sugar pills, go to your next pack.  The wife's only had 1 period in probably the last 2 years.  Wouldn't have had it had she not forgotten take her pill two days in a row.

Correct. Low body fat is a mitigating factor is the cessation of menses.
Happens most frequently with endurance athletes. marathons runners etc.,

I've never had a period !

Lucky man!

ps: Though you may never have had one, I don't doubt that you've probably suffered through one though.  ;)
