They were hoping for something different.  Instead, what did we get:

1.  Cap & Trade - new taxes on energy

2.  Tax FAMILIES & SMALL BUSINESSES grossing 250k and over.

3.  Bush tax cuts going away thereby increasing top marginal tax rate

4.  Justification for pork barrell spending to oblivion.

5.  Bailouts for reckless borrowers.

I agree. I wish they would implement a sales tax instead of an income tax. An extra dollar on some items wouldn't hurt much and could bring in billions of revenue. Personally, if i were in charge, I'd add extra sales tax to all the unhealthy shit out there. Add 50 cents to cigarettes, add some to useless sugary junk food and snacks. If people statred to hurt from that, maybe they'd move away from that stuff, the end result being less medical expense burdens for lung cancer, emphysema, diabetes, obesity. Too bad, it will never happen.

Teusday was based on Bernake saying he was not going to nationalize the banks, nothing Obama said or did.

today, however, is based on the housing figures, Obama's new taxes and socialism, and a march towards a depression.

33386's interpretation of how the market reacted this week is what I heard on CNBC from a couple market specialists.  Investors and the market react to financial news.  Yesterday, they heard nothing encouraging from Obama's speach to react too.

One danger in back and forth discussions with banks and gov bailouts is this: Big banks are holding off on liquidating bad assets because they are waiting to hear if the government are going to assume responsibility for those assets (ie holding them to get a better deal from taxpayor $).  We need to do it or don't do it and let the financial sector and markets deal with this issue.
