Biden, Plagiarism, and the Univ. of Delaware
« on: August 31, 2008, 09:02:37 PM »
For those of you (CQ, 240, etc.) ridiculing the fact that Palin went to the Univ. of Idaho, do you denigrate Biden's education because he went to the Univ. of Delaware?

And what about Biden's plagiarism and extremely poor academic performance as both an undergraduate and law student?

Does this concern you?

Biden Admits Plagiarism in School But Says It Was Not 'Malevolent'

. . . The faculty ruled that Mr. Biden would get an F in the course but would have the grade stricken when he retook it the next year. Mr. Biden eventually received a grade of 80 in the course, which, he joked today, prevented him from falling even further in his class rank. Mr. Biden, who graduated from the law school in 1968, was 76th in a class of 85.

. . .

The file also included Mr. Biden's transcript from his days as an undergraduate at the University of Delaware. In his first three semesters, his grades were C's or D's, with three exceptions: two A's in physical education courses, a B in a course on ''Great English Writers'' and an F in R.O.T.C. The grades improved somewhat later but were never exceptional.

. . . .

Find a post where I denigrate it?

I *never* denigrate any education at all.

I merely pointed out when poeple were saying it's the same, that two Ivy league degrees are technically superior to one Idaho degree.

nobody would have issue with Palin's education if Palin had the resume Biden does.  I don't even think the word ridicule is right.  Nobody ridiculed, they compared.

I read that NYT article. The only objective thing to say about it is that Biden's a son-of-a-bitch.

I merely pointed out when poeple were saying it's the same, that two Ivy league degrees are technically superior to one Idaho degree.

Here:

Quote
Of course it matters, and it is daft to say it doesn't.

If any of our kids were on their deathbed, and we had a choice between a Harvard educated doctor and a Uni of Idaho doctor - we'd all go for Harvard and we know it.

And here:

Quote
All other things being equal, the sheet fact remains education is not all the same.

To deny that a Ivy League degree is technically superior, and that having 2 is better than 1, simply defies any point of classification.

And this one:

Quote

McCain had tons of solid picks like Romney - but whipped out an Idaho college grad, with 4 kids to take care off, who has only left the USA twice, and is an 18 month governor of a tiny state and under investigation for abuse of power.

Have you referred to Biden as a "Delaware college grad"?

That is not denigrating you're reaching. Those were in response to you saying the eduction was equal. She is an Idaho grad? Whats wrong with saying that? If I said whipped out a Harvard grad is that wrong?

And sure, if someone says Bidens Delaware degree is equal to 2 Ivy League degrees I will make the same points.

Where's the academic plagairism?  What's wrong with repeating courses to bolster grade point averages?  Last time I checked, that was permitted.

I served with a Naval Officer that graduated with a degree from Harvard.

He was an average officer.

It's a damn piece of paper. What you do with the education is what counts.

I am not disputing any of that.

I'm not a native english speaker and have zero formal training in it. I learned it from TV, and the net. My sibling has an actual degree in from an Ivy League strangely enough and I wipe the floor with them english-ability wise.

My thing was - people were saying they are equal. Of course they are not. Technically speaking, 2 is better than 1. Plus Ivy league or not. That was all my point, and it's valid.

CQ I don't think any of your posts were in response to my saying "the education was equal."  What quote of mine are you talking about?

C'mon CQ.  Your reference to "Idaho grad" was not a meant as a compliment.

Then why was he punished and why did he drop out of the presidential election because this came to light?

I thought this thread was about his university academic career.  Are you now discussing his later political career with topic of his alleged plagiarism of a union leader's speech?

I think it was when it was saying it was elitist to discuss that, which I don't think.

I said she was an Idaho grad. She is. I've called Obama a Harvard grad many times, no one minded that?

If you take it that saying she is an Idaho grad is an insult, when it is mere statement of fact, that that reiterates my point.

Again - all my point is, if one wants to compare education levels, 2 beats 1, Ivy beats Idaho. That is all.

His plagiarism during the 88 campaign was a bigger story because of his law school plagiarism, so they're clearly related.

But you essentially questioned whether what he did was plagiarism, when he was actually punished for plagiarism.

Just to clarify, I did not say all were "equal," so I'm not sure where you're getting that from.

I'm not going to try and tell you what you meant or what your intent was, and I'm not going to question either in light of what you've just said, but your references did not sound complimentary to me.  Not a big deal.

Sorry, was just the general thread tone actually.

If they don't sound complimentary it's only due to facts. She is an Idaho grad. That is all I said.

Understood.  It's all in the delivery, which can be heard to read on a message board (or writing, e-mail, etc.).

Hey, if you're going to steal, it might as well be from the best.

And for the record, this kind of stuff happens all the time in academia b/c everyone plagiarizes.  He went a bit too far though.
