Pictures from Texas showing the destruction from Ike
« on: September 21, 2008, 12:12:10 PM »
The financial hurricane last week kind of bumped this out of the news but my entire family is in Texas (not in the path of the storm) and they've been keeping me informed.

My daughters mom just moved to Westlake 2 days before the storm hit.  She was lucky just a little rain.  But her brother lives in Port Arthur and she said he got it pretty bad.  My good friends in Louisiana during Katrina opened up their home and property and had over 300 people staying on their property and they fed them and everything after Katrina.  I lived in Hawaii during Iniki and that one was pretty for us.

well i was in the path of the storm, and i had a awesome time ;D The area got shit hammered. We are making very good progress already.

i have learned 3 things during this storm

1) FUCK FEMA, they haven't done shit except get in the way.

2) the news made it sound allot worse than it really is.

3) Texas as a state did a damn fine job with this one, Louisiana should really take notes from us Texans on how to handle the situation. I know Ike wasn't as strong as Katrina but you cannot solely rely on the government to help you in this type of situation. the state itself has to take some responsibility.

I am helping to get cell phone sites working again on the island.  I went to Moody gardens, Stewart, JamaicaBeach, Coronado cell phone sites.  Coronado is just past the San Luis pass toll bridge on the freeport side.  stewart, and Jamaica Beach are along 3005 across the highway from west beach. and moody gardens site is next to interstate 45. I saw a new yellow Corvette that looks intact, but was  totally immersed in salt water. also a new white BMW convertible.  These vehicles are total losses despite looking intact..  Also all the beach houses that have to be taken down because they are on the wrong side of the dunes now.  I also saw a multi story condo building on the wrong side of the dunes, this will be interesting legally.
The law in Texas is that the beach from the dunes to the water are public lands and cannot have private structures on it.

it really wasn't that bad, the wind wasn't anything like i thought it would be. we had wind gust of 135mph and sustained winds of 101mph (i think,I'll double check later) but i really didn't think the wind was a real big deal. i guess i just expected more, i think i get more wind hauling ass on my motorcycle.

i have come to realize that the only thing to fear in a hurricane is the storm surge. if it weren't for the storm surge i wouldn't see any point of evacuating.

I have tons of family on Galveston Island.

We had 7 homes destroyed by Ike.

The devestation can be realized much better in person...

We still cannot find my uncles house, he lived on the west end of the island and everthing in his area got leveled.

My home was fine, just had to repair my fence and few trees.

i had to work as a back up unit in Galveston from 3pm Friday-6pm Saturday during the storm, so i might have seen your missing house float by ;D

seriously though man, i am sorry for your family's loss. i also didn't sustain any damage at my personal home (some of my rent houses got hit a little)

but like i was saying earlier, the storm surge is really what kicked Galveston as well as the whole area's ass.

Sorry to hear about your family's homes Overload but glad yours is OK.  Are they all staying w/you now? :o  Where are they staying?  Do they think they'll re-build in the same places?  Do they have any estimates regarding when their new homes could be built?

Tony - i actually rode out the storm at my girls house near clay road and the beltway 8W. then we stayed at my place in memorial the rest of the time because her area lost power for about a week.

Bench - you might have! did you see all those boats stacked up near the causeway? that was nuts, I-45 was covered in house parts and boats! i feel i got lucky, as my area has a lot of huge trees that feel onto neighbors homes, but not mine.

Stella - Thanks for the kind words! we are doing well and are looking for new homes for my family members. i still have several people living with me, but it adds a little excitement!...lol

My uncle wants to rebuild on the west end again, he just loves the beach and the fishing. others are looking to move a bit north, out of the flooding areas. as bench said, the 15' storm surge was the most devastating part. we have never seen a surge like that on the Texas coast before, ever. two days before the storm hit, the water was up 8' already and crashing over the seawall, this has never even been documented before in this area.

It might have been a category 2, but it hit like a category 4 and did Katrina type damage. still many people without power and homes, but life is slowly getting back to normal.

I think most people are allowed to start rebuilding on Galveston this week, but many people have no idea where there homes are, so they have to track down their concrete slab and go from there.

You could give his family money to show how much you care Stella...as a good Christian, wouldn't that be the proper thing to do?
