White phosphorus in combat (warning: graphic!)
« on: August 17, 2009, 02:17:39 PM »
Any of you ever seen the effects of white phosphorus up close?  International conventions ban most aspects of chemical warfare, but in recent theaters white phosphorus has been used and effectively circumvents the ban.  The U.S. and its allies have been the primary users of wp, but it is only a matter of time before U.S. enemies begin to use this weapon.  Should wp fall under the ban on chemical weapons?

willie pete is supposed to only be used to destroy equipment......the grenades are good to throw into truck hoods to melt the motors....

ban? whats the difference really? shrapnel from bombs or burns from WP...you either die, or you get fucked up. either way the receiving end is lose lose

WP in grenade form....no ban. it only hurts the people you are trying to hurt if you use it against combatants
wp bombs.....ban em. they really dont do too much more a bigger conventional bomb wouldnt do....

WP is nasty stuff one of the only ways to stop it from burning is covering it with mud, plain water has no effect on it.

When I was in the Army we were in the field training,a Sgt had a WP canister in his BDU's pocket. Somehow in the Duece 1/2 it went off. It was absolutely horrible. The BDU's, camo's & skin all melted together. When I got out 3yrs later he was still assigned to Walter Reed & had endured countless skin graffs. Another Sgt who tryed to help had suffered nasty burns to his hands. WP is some nasty sh*t. Burns at something like 2500 degrees.

Based on your experience do you think WP should be classified as a chemical weapon and banned? ???

Bay banning only works if EVERYONE agrees to it.
It is no good I am running around with "clean weapons" but the rouge or terrorist states play dirty and keep all kinds of nasty shit there for themselves.
Controlled use is the best, remember you are trying to kill the person you are using it against.

Your comment about banning is obvious.  I just think it is curious that the US and Israel have been the primary users of WP in recent conflicts.  By almost any measure it is a chemical weapon.  Saddam Hussein was excoriated for using chemical weapons on his own people, but even when his country was being invaded by US forces and his regime toppled, he did not use chemical weapons against US troops.  I wonder how people would have reacted had he used WP against US troops.

i understand your thought process...and to a degree I agree with you. However, comparing WP to mustard gas is like an apples and oranges comparison.

Think of WP like a regular bomb.........its just a burning bomb. It hits a target with relative precision. Gas/ chem bombs work for area targets and are indiscriminate. Chem weapons have no other use other than killing all breathing creatures.

Whether youre hitting a tank with a conventional bomb to blow it to bits....or willie pete to blow it to BURNING bits......the destruction is the same. everyone that is hit dies. If youre in the area...you either get shrapnel from the conventional bomb....or burnt from the WP one.

gas kills everyone....flows with the wind.....

First off we don't use this crap as an offensive weapon. U don't load WP into an artillery piece and fire it to kill people. Its used as smoke in that manner. Yes it can be used against people in Grenade form, but those are made to burn and destroy equipment as opposed to a fragmentary weapon. They're a useful tool, nothing more. This isn't a nerve agent, we're not dropping WP bombs.

I worked with the mortars in the army and my understanding was WP was only used for armored vehicles. If we spotted "troops in the open" were to use HE rounds.
