Job and energy levels
« on: September 18, 2008, 07:19:07 PM »
Is it possible to hate a job so much that it tires you out completely, even though you expend little energy while doing the job?  I workout 1.5 hours a day and eat pretty well so this is the only other thing I can think of.

Yes, it has happened to me.
I really thought about this one today.  I did very little at work today and got home and was exhausted.  I sat and thought about it further and this has been the case for the last two months.  At first I thought it was just fatigue from new training but I don't think that is it.

If you absolutely hate your job then it will make you tired.  You should start looking for a new job or if you are financially able you can quit now then look for another job.

My experience goes like this:  I recently left the highest paying job I ever had because I loathed it.  I worked about 3 or 4 days a week for 10 or 11 hrs, so I still had 3 or 4 days off but I hated it.  On days I worked I ate almost nothing and I slept from the time I got home to the time I had to go to work again.  There were several days on my drive to work where I almost got off at a random freeway exit and turned around and headed home.  It was that bad.  I never acually did it but came very close many times.  The money was good but it was really not worth it.

If it is that bad for you I would suggest you quit and find a job you enjoy more.  Now if you are ok with your job and just not "in love" with it, then stay until you find a better job, but if you truly hate it then get out!

I am in the process of getting a gov't job, or at least trying  ;D, so I'd rather not get another job in the mean time but I swear...2 fucking hours into work and I am exhausted.  I PT the fuck out of myself in the am but still, I get a good breakfast and all and make sure I have enough protein.

I think you might be right man.  The chewing tobacco isn't even helping me relax, probably because I do it less.   ;D

i was a teacher and did a good job - but i was EXHAUSTED every day after work.

I went to the local university career center and took some tests.  My natural temprament was better for small office setting, computer work, small meetings, not trying to control groups of children and wipe their noses.

I went back to school, and 3 years later I actually worked in that university career center - took that woman's job when she left ironically - and learned to get good at web design.

My wife is a teacher, and she loves it.  Energized by the kids.  They exhausted me.  I was a star teacher, knew my shit and was good at it - but it exhausted me because I didn't have the right kind of temprament for it.

I had a job I hated so much that on Sunday nights I would cry knowing an entire week of hell was about to begin again.

If I arrived even 10 minutes early at the office I would drive around until the minute I was supposed to be at work so as not to have to spend any extra time there.

I remember getting a breakfast sandwich before work at a fast-food restaurant one day and being struck by how happy the people working there seemed to be.  Had they paid the same I would have applied there.

Hope you get that other job but you might want to apply at some other places as well.

Sounds like a project I just finished.
The guy who originally had the job ran of to Korea.
The client was difficult and lied to us about the state of the plant.
My soft ware writer was bi-polar and he kept dropping us.
My relationship got so bad with this guy with the threats and counter threats that I threatened to lay criminal charges if he threatrened me again.
All the other sub contractors walked off site because of the constant delays, I had to pay bribes to get them to come back
I only had 5 days once we shut down to swing something over and commision it, a project that would normally take 3 weeks and if I failed the losses would run into millions a day!
I finally finished the project on wednesday, I have been on medication (PAX-5) for the last 3 weeks just to switch off, sleep and not kill people.
Oh yeah the project is over run by 250 000 bucks but that is not my problem, I just had to finish it. 8)
I nearly walked out of my work with all of this, my training went to shit and I got fat eating food every 5 minutes.  >:(

Stress sucks  >:( >:( >:(

I can't see how anyone could work somewhere they didn't like.  My last actual job I had was in 1984 when I worked at the oil refinery in El Segundo, CA.  Since then I have alway made my money on my own.  I was an actor from 1985 to 1993 but I didn't really consider that working for someone.  I haven't had to have a time card since then.  I have been offered many jobs and opportunities to make a ton of money and turned them down cause I just couldn't see me doing it day in and day out.

You just walked in and took the tests?

I was an alumni, so it was free.  yeah, I think I called and got an appointment, then came in.  It's called the meyers-Briggs personality test or something like that.  You answer a bunch of Qs on the computer (would you rather be doing this, or this... etc).  It cost $10 bucks to take for any joe off the street.  I'm sure you can take it free online by now, that was 2000, I think.

They give you a list of careers that your temprament is built for, and a list of jobs to avoid.  I was told to avoid teaching, nursing, and other jobs where patience and compassion are required... I just am not a patient person.  I was told taht jobs requiring personal efficiency are perfect for me - computer programmer was one of the jobs, so was networking, so was accounting.  I started with computer networking, ended up in programming.  I get more work done in 2 hours than most people complete all day, so I get more goof-off time, which I like :)

My last job was working as general manager for a company. Paid the best I have ever gotten absolutely outstanding, but I was doing 65+ hour weeks in high-stress environment. Working from 5am to sometimes 7 or 8 pm. I was stuck supervising a large group of idiots and immigrants who honestly did not care if they did a decent job or not. They would wreck a 120K piece of equipment and walk off to the shade and smoke cigarettes until someone in management fond them, then play stupid.

The head boss had three buddies of his that worked there, and basically did whatever the hell they wanted. If they didn't want to work, they would walk off and hold up the entire line.

Made me sick... lethargic. I didn't want to even get up in the morning, didn't want to go to bed at night because I knew the next thing I would have to do is go to work.

I basically stopped caring. I would come in late and read the paper, and surf the internet all the time. Boss fired me, and I got the unemployment on his cost!  ;D

I should have been pissed at losing the salary, but I never thought twice about it...

Shitty jobs exist all over the place guys.

Dude, those guys played the head man like a drum. I had never seen such manipulation before that.
