Being a successful fitness competitor without a coach?

Is it possible to be a successful fitness/figure competitor without having a coach/trainer?

Yes, it is, but I would definately get advice as much as I can, and have someone make sure you routine is what the judges are looking for.  It can be a friend, or someone else who has competed in the past.
