It wasn't horrible, it was something like 7 bucks for it filled with 3 liters of diet soda. Not bad and when it's done I just used it as a water jug.

The big gulp is only 30 ounces, which is the same size as a McDonald's large.  I have no problem finishing a large Diet Coke.  

Americans have become used to the larger sized drinks.  30 ounces for a cup just seems normal.  If I went to Europe, their cups would seem like shot glasses.

I was looking at a family photograph from 1975, where our family was gathered around the kitchen table eating a Sunday roast beef dinner.  What stuck me the most about this old photograph was the size of the dinner plates we had back then.  I would say they were a third smaller in size compared to the standard size of dinner plates we have today.  No wonder everybody is so much heavier, we're piling far more food on our plates than ever before.  Even standard glassware has become larger.

The "Big Gulp" is a result of what the food service industry in the United States learned some time ago....

It was discovered that after the overhead of serving a food item is paid, the size of the portion didn't figure that much in the bottom line...So restaurants, fast food joints, places that sell "fountain drinks" greatly increased the size of the servings of everything they sell.

Old antique and collectible dinnerware from several generations ago were striking in that the dishes meant for desserts, ice cream, cake and the like were very much smaller.
