oats, oats, and more oats
« on: December 04, 2008, 03:06:14 AM »
Hi
Just a quick question to throw out there about rolled oats ; working real early in the mornings, I do not have either the time nor the desire for an elaborate breakfast, before heading out the door, but have been making power shakes due to their time saving qualities.  Basically I blend up 1 cup of rolled oats, mix that with 1 cup orange juice, 2 scoops protein powder, and about a table spoon of flax seed oil.  I blend up the concoction until smooth, down it, and find it keeps me till mid morning or better.  What I was wondering, is if there is the same nutritional value in grinding up the oats, as there would be if one would cook it?  I just say this as I know when you cook it, you are cook it a second time(the oats are steam pressed already), as well as the digestive enzymes in your mouth must take effect as well.  Is this method of quick breakfast good enough, or could I be doing things better?  Comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

THX :)

it u are blendin it, then u are essentially predigesting it by way of breaking it down.  your body wont have to break it down as much so in essense you will get a little quicker of a rise in glucose in ones blood stream.  i dont recommend the orange juice.  i would instead use water, and double up on the flax seed oil.  if  u have to, use 50 %nonfatmilk, and 50% water and if u still have to, then use apple juice, as it is lower on the glycemic index than orange juice.  when i am in a rush, ill do 2 scoops of low carb isopure in water with 1 cup of old fashioned oats, with 10 grams of cratine and 5 stawberries. mix it all  in a blender,  YUMMY!!!!!!!!!
