Religion made sure to have people afraid of challenging authority, studying and researching on your own was the work of the devil, hence we had the 800 years DARK AGES were people were kept in the DARK. This concept was represented well in the bible and very successfuly.
Where we are today in knowledge and technology we would have been 800 years ago if not for the Dark Age. If you did not conform to mainstream you were hunted down. All knowledge encountered was simply burned or changed. The Vatican to this day are in control of 1000s Sumerian and Egyptian tablets and scrolls, only a few have been made public.
