Frank Mir Speaks
« on: December 06, 2008, 11:56:35 AM »
CBSports.com has an article up with Frank Mir in which he discusses his upcoming fight with Antonio Nogueira.

What he thinks of Nog:

I look up to Nogueira. I think he's a phenomenal fighter, somebody who is an inspiration to a lot of people. He shows a lot of heart in all his wars he's been in. Fighting him is not going to take anything away from him.

...

He has a pace. I think Nogueira's a better athlete than sometimes he lets himself on to be. A lot of guys, we go for home runs in fights, and that can be a problem.

...

He doesn't kill himself trying to get anything, he just sets a pace and keeps that same pace. He's like a marathon runner. He knows how fast he can run a mile and he can push a certain pace but if he goes faster he'll get tired, and if he goes any slower he lets the pressure of the guy.

On his conditioning training:

After I beat Lesnar I was back in the gym Monday. It doesn't mean I don't take a day off here and there to go spend time with the family, but two days never go by where I'm not in the gym, even when I don't have a fight coming up. And 10 weeks out I'm in the gym every day, twice a day.

...

The minute you step in the ring you have a pretty good judge of where you're at. I knew where I was, I had no cardio in my early career in the UFC. That was due to my training. Cardio is not genetic. People can be a little bit better than others naturally, but you've got to work at it.

On how long the fight will last:

I don't see it being quick at all. I can't imagine that in over 35 fights Nogueira has had -- and no one has finished him -- that I'm going to be the one to do it.

...

I've really expected that this fight is going to be a 25-minute fight. If anything my strategy has been more geared towards making sure I win convincingly on the judges' score cards.

Will it be a jiu-jitsu extravaganza?

I think going jiu-jitsu for jiu-jitsu is going to be quite difficult for me. He's been doing jiu-jitsu longer than I have, and if anybody asked me I would say he's a better jiu-jitsu guy than I am. He's been a black belt longer than I have. For me to say I have an edge there, I don't see where. But that's why I'm not trying to make it a strictly confirmed jiu-jitsu match, I'm going to use elbows and strikes and mix it up and go for more unorthodox submissions -- more footlocks and kneebars and whatnot.

If not JJ, then what?

Striking, I think I have the potential to be the better striker, but as far as actually applying it in the ring that's a different story. That's really going to be my goal now -- I've seen what I've done in practice and I need to transfer that to life.

And finally:

Nogueira can't stop me from fighting my hardest. I can stop me.

that sucks,i have 3 herniated discs and man they are no joke.im in pain most of the day but im alright when im sitting or layin down, ive done alot of labor work in my days and it catches up with ya at some point.franks a tough guy and im sure his adrenaline will carry him through the fight and he prolly wont even feel the disc that much.ive done grappling tournaments and had to take painkillers just to get through the matches,it sucks doin that but i had no choice if i wanted to compete.the pain can get overwhelming at times

I dont see Mir winning this - his only hope is to get a submission on a guy that aint ever been submitted and wont tap for love nor money so he might have a punchers chance at best.

youll know when your disc is bulging or herniated, youll feel like anytime you bend over to pick something up a nasty pain comes on in your back,it used to feel like my lower back was about to snap from the pain.i hurt it when i was young,20+ years ago.i was working construction and it started comin on little by little.ive done labor most of my life,im really a rocket scientist but i didnt like making big money and usin my brain so i quit, lol.you gotta do watcha gotta do to eat and feed yourself/family or else youll be in the streets.i remember days working on the chimneys when my back hurt so bad i used to put alittle rag in my mouth to bite down on cause of the pain,im a candy ass i guess, lol.besides the oxycontin i was takin to help the pain there arent to many options besides surgery and chiropractic treatment.treat your back good everyone cause once you screw it up its never the same again

I personally was not very impressed with Nog's last few fights. If herring knew how to finish a fight, he had Nog beat after the high kick (?!).  Lucky shot?  Possibly, but Tim out boxed Nog the whole fight till it went to the groung, and Nog was able to get a coreographed grab that a novice at BJJ would have been able to predict and defend, which he won't be able to do to Mir.  I think Nog's only advantage in this fight is that he is tough as nails and has never been stopped.

I think Frank knows that he's in for a rough night. Nog has better JJitsu and striking + he can soak up a lot of damage. Lets not forget that Frank needs get his cardio sorted out because Nog will take him into deep waters. Frank's achilles heel has always been his cardio

Mir's an ok guy but I'm rooting for Nog.

On paper its a Minotauro win but we'll see how it works out.

I dunno man... Nog looked pretty tired after a round with Tim.  And Mir has a lot beter Jits than tim and his cardio and striking are getting better.

i agree about the tired part with a round with tim but i respectivly disagree about mir having better jitz, i think nog is a better jitz guy as far as credentials go.but you might have a point if you meant mirs style of jitz is better suited for mma more then nogs style.alot of people fail to realize that there are great wreslers in the ufc who do okay, then there are average wrestlers who do awesome in mma, same goes for boxing, jitz, thai ect.for instance when tito fought vladdy at a 205 title fight, vladdy came into that fight a way higher decorated wrestler then ortiz ever was.vladdy was a olympic caliber wrestler and tito just a california state jr college wrestler,id say theres a little difference there, lol.tito not only won the fight and retained his title but totally dominated the wrestling and takedowns.the difference was tito learned how to do mma wrestling compared to regural wrestling, same with randy,he wasnt the greatest striker in the game but he used what i call mma boxing in his arsenal and beat guys that on paper where supposed to be better strikers.im sure if you put tim syvia for instance in a boxing ring against randy with regural queensbury rules tim would prolly get the better of randy but not in mma.i know alot of it had to do with tim and chucks thoughts of randy,s great takedowns that made them hesitant about overcommiting on thier strikes when they fought.thanks for reading everyone,i know its hard to read my 3rd grade level typing
