Peyton MVP
« on: January 02, 2009, 10:32:47 AM »
Peyton Manning was voted MVP today 3 times now...was he deserving?

Yes the Colts won 9 straight games but I don't know...got to look at the Burner Turner also.

Well deserved.  Given the injuries and disappearance of Marvin Harrison, I think Manning's performance was as good as anyone in the NFL.  And the bottom line is, after a rough start, they won.

Deserved, because in the absence of someone else who was outright compelling, he was good.

Being the NFL's most valuable player is not just about stats. You take away one player from any team and how much is lost? Some intangibles don't always show up on the stat sheet. Peyton has got to be one of the most cerebral QB's to ever play the game. His pocket awareness and always being able to find the safety valve underneath coverage are unparalleled, IMO.

But number's wise, I would agree that 27 TD's is low for MVP caliber.

Don't know about cerebral, it took him years to evolve into the better QB he is now.

In terms of pocket awareness and handling pressure, if he was really so good at that he'd have more SBs-essentially he didn't handle most pressure playoff situtations that well, actually. Didn't effectively get rid of the ball OR run with it.

He's become a better QB in the last few years, beginning with the SB year. I think that happened because he was forced to rethink his previous approaches that never paid off in the playoffs, and change things up. Probably brought on by that especially bad year just before the SB. Changed his approach after that, maybe with the input of the coaching staff and/or his dad.

I meant more so in the present tense, rather than earlier in his career. I remember when he couldn't get past the Patriots in the playoffs for a few years straight. Then once he did, his elite status took on a whole new level.

Agreed, he has evolved in to a better QB now, as did Elway-defeats, different coaches, etc. finally pound in to their heads to play smarter later in their careers.

One and done against an 8-8 team...what a joke. I guess he has time for more commercials and a haircut. Nice hissy fit on the sidelines........good job horseface.

I've long thought that Manning might only end up with the one SB. He just lost to one of the league's worst pass defenses and as usual, didn't keep the offense on the field at the end of the game long enough to prevent SD from tying it. Another loss for Dungy as well, between this team and his old team in Tampa his teams almost always fold excepting the one year.

I cant think of one person who didn't put their money on the Colts. Seemed like a lock at -2.

But give the Chargers credit. The playoffs are a whole new season. Both teams were 0-0 going into the game.

I bet the chargers.. I also think that Ryan should've got MVP.. Last place falcons make it to the Playoffs with a Rookie QB and there starter in Jail. NO ONE THOUGHT RYAN WOULD DO WHAT HE DID... FUCK ROOKIE OF THE YEAR MATT RYAN DESERVED MVP!

They're ok, and clearly intended to lighten up his ponderous image. Not in Montana commercial territory.

I can't agree with you on Matt Ryan as MVP.  Manning is the MVP.  Let me first say that I am a huge fan of Matt Ryan, and I am thinking of doing my masters at BC.  I have watched the kid play since he came to the school, and he is going to be a great one.  If you look at Ryan for MVP you have to look at Cassel to.  Cassel has better numbers, and some of these facts may suprise you as to why I think he would deserve the MVP more than Ryan (and to prove why Manning is the MVP).

1.) Ryan turned around a franshise as a rookie. Cassel stepped in for the best QB in the NFL and led a team to a 11-5 record with 14 starters on IR.  He also didn't start a game since highschool, and did not play a single snap in college.  There is more pressure to win in Boston, and with the pats going 16-0 last year the pressure was magnified.  Atlanta would have been happy with a winning record.  They got much more, but no one expected Ryan to do what he did.

2.) The patriots had the most allowed sacks in the NFL this year and they don't have a star rb on the team due to injury. Infact at one point a UDFA rookie was running the ball for them.  Matt Cassel put up better numbers than Ryan while being sacked over twice as much, and without a high powered running game.  The running game makes the passing game easier, and the Falcons O-line and running game was much better than the pats this year.

3.) Roddy White and the falcons weapons are highly overlooked.  Roddy White had better numbers than randy Moss this year, and although Welker is a total beast, that advantage over Ryan is canceled out by the fact that Micheal Turner is a star running back who causes huge problems for opposing teams.  As a whole, the Falcons had comparable total offensive numbers as the pats this year and Cassel still had better numbers.  The fact is that Ryan is sorrounded by a lot of offensive talent, and they were pretty damn good.

4.) The Falcons had far less injuries than the pats

5.) The 08 version of the AFC east was much harder division than the one the Falcons play in.  Also, the weather sucks in the winter.

6.) The numbers don't lie:

8 Matt Cassel  NE  QB  327  516  63.4  32.2  3,693  7.2  230.8  21  11  182  35.3  76T  37  6  47  89.4

12 Tony Romo  DAL  QB  276  450  61.3  34.6  3,448  7.7  265.2  26  14  150  33.3  75T  48  11  20  91.4
13 Matt Ryan  ATL  QB  265  434  61.1  27.1  3,440  7.9  215.0  16  11  157  36.2  70T  45  9  17  87.7

I don't think that Cassel is an MVP and I don't think that Ryan is either.  Manning is the MVP and as shown above, Ryan is getting a ton of hype to go along with his awesome play.  The Falcons are way better than people think.  Ryan is going to be great and he is the clear OROTY, but he aint an MVP.
