Breaking in heavy bag?
« on: December 26, 2008, 04:27:04 PM »
What is the best way to break in a heavy bag?  I know the obvious hitting and kicking, but the bag is as hard as bricks.  Are there any tricks like taking a little sand out?  What is the best.  I hit/kick hard for  about thirty minutes a day and it still is hard. and yes I do it hard.

I don't know what is in it, it feels like bricks.  I've been doing martial arts for over 20 years and this is the hardest bag I have trained with.  Either I am getting old or they are making bags different.  I am getting ready to break down and get a Fairfax.  This bag is plain 100 lbs black vinyl bag.  I hurt my left shoulder on it about 6 months ago and to this day it still hurts.

what you are describing sounds similar to what we've got at my gym ......got about 4-5 bags like that in the middle rack of our hanging bags mixed in with all the rest.  The boxers use them mostly...even the young amateurs.

Those bastards are solid and yes they do feel like there is concrete in them. You can feel your damn bones rattle going upside those bastards.

and yes...I know what you mean. your shoulders, back of neck even hurts using them... and this is with flawless form simply running combos.

I'm used to them now since I worked more with boxing the last few months. now the only thing that hurts at times is my wrist and knuckles but I don't use them daily only by choice when I feel

Pace yourself on that bag. Hitting it daily will definitely take a toll on your shoulders, wrist and fists no doubt.

Rice bags are real giving.  I will take the baseball bat to it again and suck it up and quit whining.

Haha, I was waiting for this post.  I had an over/under of 10 posts before Keith chimed in with what kind of bag BJ had.  Keith knows all about BJ's hanging bag, isn't tht right Keith.

No not all about it.  But since I worked there and this thread was about something I had input on I decided to post something.  How much did you make on the over/under.

My heavy bag sounds identical to yours. When I first started kicking it I could only kick the damn thing 10 times and my shins would be bruised for a week. Regardless I just kept kicking the thing and made it a 5 kick rule anytime I went into the garage. Now the thing has some give. Just keep working it. Your shit will work itself  in (body and bag) or you could take a bat to it I guess....

I love these types,  They make your hands hurt and make you feel like you hit like a  bitch.  They are ego destroying and that's what makes them so great.

That and if you can hit these types of bags you know your shit is conditioned. My buddy trains pretty hard and he hates my bag, but his gyms bags are very very soft.

All I heard is he will be in unreal shape and his strength has gone up a lot.  I talked to one of the trainers there last week.  As long as BJ's head is in it he will kill GSP.  His physical conditioning and strength will be at his all time best.  So just hope mentally he is up.

Have you got Modern Bags @ yr gym or are the bags old school (pre 1990) most Modern heavy bags (the full body length ones) are filled up with thick ass black rubber offcuts like the 2 out of the 6 bags we have hanging up @ our hall, we (8-12 of us) have been kicking the shit out of the heavy bags for the past 2-YEARS and theres still no "give" in the 2 of them...cheek whats in that bag of yours...if its the heavy rubber offcuts don,t expect any give in the damn thing for a long time ;D
