Piracy in the region has been around since the early 1600's.
Same as ion Eastern Asia.
Somalia priacy only accounts for about 1/3 of all piracy world wide with much more coming from East Asia.
Right now there is a naval vacuum as America nor Britain has not been confronting these pirate havens and most are now failed stated. In Somalia and Indonesia and elsewhere this has allowed piracy to flourish.
Piracy will always be a problem at trading bottle necks. It has nothing to do with pollution.
Its about money.

Somalia is a relative latecomer to contemporary sea piracy. Since 2000, southeast Asia has had the most dangerous waters in the world. Malaysia and the islands of the Indonesian archipelago have seen the lion's share of sea piracy since 2000. Also troubling: the waters off Nigeria and Iraq.
