BMW X6 M and X5 M
« on: April 04, 2009, 10:22:32 AM »
BMW just unvieled the new X6 M and X5 m, both with a 4.4 liter twin turbo V8 that puts out 555 HP and 500 pound feet of torque. 0-60 in conservatively rated at 4.5, so that is probably 4.1 in the real world

Yawn!  Not interested.   :(

The X6 is a vehicle without an audience http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=270657.msg3807817#msg3807817  and the X5 peaked about 2 years ago.  We all know BMW can make a great gasoline engine, but gasoline is the past not the future.  When the X5 runs on something other than gasoline I'll pay attention/bring my checkbook.

And I am not gratuitously bashing; I drive a BMW.

Great engine, will obviously redifine how well we thought a SUV should perform. Enjoy it whilst it lasts i guess....... :-\
No doubt about it...

The thing with the X6M and X5m, is that they are counter to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S, and the Mercedes ML63 AMG, those have an audience, and I'm surprised that BMW didn't jump on that beforehand. They flirted with a one off X5 LM 9with a 700 HP V12-I've posted it here). There will be people who buy this, just to have the M badge...

Plus this is a testing ground for that same engine to be in the F10 M5 (next gen)

I stand by what I said in the other thread:  the X6 is a vehicle without an audience in the USA.

•  It is obviously not a family vehicle because it has a small truck and tiny back seat; no one with kids or parcels to carry is going to want to bother with it when there are so many other (more practical) choices: the ML, the Cayenne, etc.

• it is too expensive for most single guys (would a woman even consider this SUV?) unless you happen to be the recipient of an AIG bonus.  It is $10-25K more than an X5.

• the most likely buyer is a DINKs household and even there the vehicle has problems.  I sat in the front and back: the vehicle is huge with a tiny, cramped interior. One can easily tote around 5 people comfortably in an ML.  That’s impossible in the X6.

No sale.

it's sad BMW is going ahead with these M cars and not a new Z4M or a new M3 CSL

That's what i was kind of confused about.....

Why spend all this time/money on developing some super SUV, when as you said, what about a new CSL or Z4M?

Just seems like an odd time to release these super SUV's............but hey, people will buy them.........just look at the X6

and i'm sure there are some BMW purists out there who think that adding an M SUV cheapens/tarnishes the M badge........  :-\
No doubt about it...

As of the X6 intor, they were sold out of them, even though now you might find a couple on the lots. They  were shipped and produced in limited numbers. And the X6 was meant to be a SUV coupe version of ...the 6 series, like the X5 is a SUV version of the 5 series, and X3 is, and the X1 is...so they knew it was gonna be cramped, just like the Mercedes CLS has little head room in the back due to it's swooping lines. But they still sold. I liked the X6, in black...

As far as the M3 CSL, BMW said that there is no market for it, yet they of course say there is a market for X6M and the X5M. The Z4, well it's now a hardtop convertible, and the Z4 based m coupe didn't sell very well (i liked it), so one could in theory pick up a one on the cheap.

The same people who say putting a M badge would cheapen the brand, are the same ones who want BMW to build a M7 to competed against the S65 AMG's 9but BMW lets Alpina build the B7's)

The same type of people who cry that Porsche built the Cayenne are now applauding the move, plus Porsche is now on their way to acquiring VW, a small company owning a bigger company...That is amazing.

That is a gimmick that carmakers have used for years.  You manufacturer and ship a limited number and then claim that the vehicle is "sold out!"   Why?  To create hype, of course.  The fact is, hype works in the auto industry just as it does in fashion, wine, and other luxury items.  Toyota did the same thing with its initial run of the Lexus LS hybrid.  The latter got one MPG better than the gasoline version but for what it costs you could by a regular LS AND a Prius and still have money to spare!  Still, the tactic worked: the LS "sold out" and gave Lexus bragging rights in the industry.

Sure, there will be some people who by the X6 just as there are always people who will buy other overpriced and impractical items.  But the X6 is never going to pull in half he numbers that the X3 or X5 do.  Or even half of the ML for that matter.  I see the ML everywhere!  That will never happen to the X6.

Funny story about the ML, my family  had stopped at a Rest Stop in VA afew yrs back. A guy in a first Gen Ml had car problems, my dad was trying to help them...The emblem fell off and was plastic...the guy said, "Ummm...German enigineering"

i kinda agree being a bmw employee/car owner ,they need to get the 7 series all wheel drive moving, every customer asks when,when,when,.m3,m5,m6 is sufficent.they will just magnify the errors already on some of these vehicles.turbo issues ,fuel pumps, vanos, all problematic.

The 400-horsepower BMW 750Li has rear-wheel steering. Below 40 miles per hour, the rear wheels can turn as much as 3 degrees opposite the direction of the front wheels, thereby reducing the big car’s turning radius.

I just read that BMW is going to make a hybrid version of the X6!  WTF?  ???

"In an interview at the auto show here last month, Hatz said Audi must offer a hybrid model to compete with rival vehicles that already offer the technology, such as the Lexus RX 400h. The BMW X6 will be offered as a hybrid late this year, and Mercedes-Benz plans to roll out a hybrid in each of its major models starting with the S400 hybrid this year."
