American faces death for rape, murder of Iraqi girl

Mon Apr 6, 2:13 PM

CHICAGO (AFP) - Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a former US soldier accused of being the ringleader of a plot to rape a teenaged Iraqi girl, murder her family and set the house alight to cover their crime.

Specialist Steven D. Green -- a soldier discharged for a "personality disorder" before the slaying was discovered -- faces the death penalty in the civil trial being held in Kentucky.

Three other soldiers were given life sentences in the March 2006 atrocity which was allegedly devised over whiskey and a game of cards at a traffic check point in Mahmudiyah, south of Baghdad.

A fourth soldier who acted as a lookout was sentenced to 27 months in jail.

Green told his friends he "wanted to go to a house and kill some Iraqis," Specialist James Barker said at a court martial.

The soldiers changed into black outfits and masks so they would look like insurgents and headed for the house of a 14-year-old girl they had noticed walking through the village.

Sergeant Paul Cortez testified that he raped Abeer Kassem Hamza al-Janabi while Barker pinned the sobbing girl to the floor.

The men switched positions and then heard about four or five shots from a bedroom where Green had taken the girl's father, mother and six-year-old sister, Cortez said.

Green shot the girl when he was finished raping her and the soldiers set the home on fire by tossing a lighter onto a Kerosene-soaked blanket covering her naked body, the other soldiers said.

They then went back to their checkpoint about 200 meters away and grilled chicken wings.

The allegations came to light a few months later when stress counselors talked to the squad after an incident in which two soldiers were abducted at a checkpoint and later brutally murdered.

Green faces 17 criminal counts -- including rape, murder and obstruction of justice -- in civilian court because he was discharged from the army before the allegations came to light.

Opening statements are scheduled for April 27

The sad part is that girl and her family are the ones many of the soldiers are over there killing.  :'(

My understanding is, this only came to light as a result of an investigation into what appears to have been a reprisal killing of American soldiers. So in addition to killing this family, the actions of these scum lead to the loss of American lives.

How would any of you react if Iraqi's had invaded the USA as an occupying force, and their soldiers did that to your daughter, ...or your neighbours?  And if you took retaliatory action, ...would that make you a terrorist or a freedom fighter?

God Jaguar, your such a fucking idiot. Taking an isolated incident where the perpatrators are being brought to justice to justify becoming a terrorist? You really are braindead. Rape and murder is something that happens in the middle east between family members on a daily basis. Where is your outrage about that? I guess when people terrorize their own people its acceptable. Saddam Hussein's sons used to rape women and kill them afterward all the time. Funny how nobody became a terrorist as a result.... right? Becuase I mean, how would you feel?

Crazy fucked up people were in Iraq before we got there, will be there long after we leave, and exist everywhere on the planet. I take solace in the fact that we are prosecuting these people instead of covering it up-- Which again I'm sure is a rarity in your opinion, because by your logic the US military murders, rapes and terrorizes people constantly, and then tries to actively conceal it--

God Jaguar, your such a fucking idiot. Taking an isolated incident where the perpatrators are being brought to justice to justify becoming a terrorist?

So in answer to the question I posed, you would consider retaliatory measures as terrorism rather than an effort to exact vengeance for a perceived crime and rid your nation of an occupying force.

You mean kind of like what goes on in America everyday? Rape & murder go on everyday in America.
where is YOUR outrage against that? Am I not suppose to think it's disgusting and heinous because it was committed by an American towards an Iraqi? You're the one who is sounding more & more braindead by the minute.  ::)

Well since you bring it up, ...they do. Not just the poor natives whose countries they invade, but their own personnel.

Look up the stats on how many US servicewomen get raped by their fellow servicemen, ...on base!

You can call it isolated incidents if you want, ...but imo, the only thing that makes it fit the definition of 'isolated incident' is it got discovered, is being discussed by the public, ...and is being prosecuted.

ps: That's 'Goddess Jaguar' to you!

Your answer to my first point totally misses the meaning of what I wrote. Or maybe you really are just so unrepentantly clueless that you are actually trying to justify your moronic position. Either way, FAIL.

Your answer to my second point proves the substance of my first point. Murder and rape happen all over the world all the time to all walks of life in varying situations. Yet you are trying to excuse an Islamonut blowing themselves up in a crowded marketplace because of one isolated incident- You consider that freedom fighting... Killing innocent women and children because one subhuman soldier committed a terrbile crime? Maybe you can explain that to the dead IRAQI'S and their family members mourning the dead, maimed and permanently disfigured as a result of your " understandable freedom fighting".  I guess the families of rape victims in this US are completely justified in blowing themselves up at shopping malls also. After all, can you blame them for the anger and resentment they feel?

The crime in this situation was disgusting and heinous. But it is just as disgusting and heinous as the crap pulled in that country every day by Insurgents and terrorists, and, last but not least, the animals who used to run that country before we invaded. Either way, killing innocent people to avenge this single act is inexcusable anyway you try to spin it.

Your last point shows your ignorance and visceral hatred of the military. Show me some concrete figures from a reputable source that states how US Service Women are raped constantly on base. While your at it, build me a rocket car, and get my 72 virgins prepared, I feel some vengeance coming on.  ::)

I think this would be a major story - IF - the killers had beaten the rap.

They didn't.  They're going to prison.

The minute they dressed as insurgents and decided to start raping and killing innocents, they lost all their licence to kill afforded to soldiers.

They're going to prison.  It's great news.  The USA took the higher ground, and nailed these guys to show our troops have to follow the law.

Did I say I considered it freedom fighting? I think it was I who posed the question you refused to answer, instead resorting to some stupid comment about Uday Hussein.

Thanks for finally answering my question. Killing innocent people to avenge a single act is inexcuseable.
Which leads to my next questions:
  • How do you feel about killing thousands of innocent people to avenge a single act?
  • How do you feel about killing thousands of innocent people to avenge a single act wherein 3000 people died?
  • Why are you so darned defensive? A condemnation of an American is NOT a condemnation of America.

Plenty of rapists and murderers in Canada.

Considering most women who are rape victims in the Muslim world are the guilty party, I don't think this incident will be breeding much of anything. Like the 13 year old Somali girl who was stoned to death in a stadium for reporting that she was raped. ::)

Ex-soldier guilty of rape, murders

Associated Press
Posted on Fri, May. 8, 2009

PADUCAH, Ky. - A jury convicted a former soldier yesterday of raping and fatally shooting a 14-year-old girl after killing her parents and younger sister while he was serving in Iraq.

Pfc. Steven Dale Green faces a possible death sentence when the penalty phase of his trial begins Monday. Green, 24, of Midland, Texas, was being tried in civilian court because he had been discharged from the Army for a personality disorder before he was charged with the Iraq crimes.

The trial started April 27, and jurors deliberated for more than 10 hours.

His defense team had asked them to consider the "context" of war, saying that soldiers in Green's unit of the 101st Airborne Division lacked leadership and received little help from the Army to deal with the loss of friends in combat.

Dude's got some nice ears.

The trail was in Kentucky - that give you any clues.
Weak jaw line - long skinny face - jug ears - all symptoms of what (hint = British/German aristocracy)

He should have been sent back to Iraq  to be dealt with, this is where the crime took place after all.

Now that is one American getting decapitated on a radical web-site, when no one will go eeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuuuuu uuuuuuw !!

No, UCMJ had nothing to do with this. He was tried in a civilian court because he was out of the military before these charges came about. I agree with DrKaje. I would have liked to see some Iraqi justice delivered. Given the weight of the evidence against him, I doubt charges of bias could be levelled against any Iraqi jury choosing to convict him.

Ex-soldier apologizes to Iraqi family for raping, killing
updated 6:55 p.m. EDT, Thu May 28, 2009

Former U.S. soldier Steven Green got life in prison
after being convicted of murdering four Iraqis.

(CNN) -- A U.S. soldier convicted of murdering an Iraqi family spoke out for the first time Thursday, issuing a public apology for his crimes.

Steven Green, who escaped the death penalty this month, told relatives of the victims that he is "truly sorry for what I did in Iraq."

"I helped to destroy a family and end the lives of four of my fellow human beings, and I wish that I could take it back, but I cannot," Green said, reading a statement at a victim impact hearing. "And, as inadequate as this apology is, it is all I can give you."

The family refused to accept the apology.

Green was found guilty in U.S. District Court in Kentucky of raping a 14-year-old girl and murdering her, her parents and her 6-year-old sister in the town of Yusufiya, about 20 miles south of Baghdad, in 2006.

A jury could not reach a unanimous decision on the death penalty, which means the judge is required under law to impose a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Green will be sentenced September 4, but the victim impact hearing was held Thursday so surviving members of the al-Janabi family could testify before they return to Iraq.

They decried Green's sentence and testified about how the heinous crime had shattered their lives and how it will haunt them always

Green said that he knows "you wish I was dead, and I do not hold that against you. If I was in your place, I am convinced beyond any doubt that I would feel the same way."

He added, "I know that I have done evil, and I fear that the wrath of the Lord will come upon me on that day. But, I hope that you and your family at least can find some comfort in God's justice."

The wailing family matriarch, Hajia al-Janabi, lunged at Green as she left the witness stand, denouncing him as a coward, a criminal and a stigma on the United States, according to Louisville's Courier-Journal newspaper.

Security officers restrained the distressed woman, the newspaper said.

Another family member, Mahdi al-Janabi, said Green had lost the ability to distinguish between terrorists and Iraqi civilians.

Green was tried in a civilian court in Paducah, Kentucky, because he had been discharged from the Army by the time his crimes surfaced.

He was the last of five soldiers who served in the 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to be convicted for the crimes and their subsequent cover-up.

The others -- Spec. James Barker, Sgt. Paul Cortez, Pfc. Jesse Spielman and Pfc. Bryan Howard -- received sentences ranging from 27 months to 110 years, with the possibility of parole in 10 years in the most severe cases.

Green said he now sees the Iraq war as "intrinsically evil, because killing is intrinsically evil."

He was sorry, he said, that he ever had anything to do with either.

You can view Green's statement here: http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/05/28/statement.pdf

An Iraqi official condemns the verdict and called the entire trial unjust. He's calling for a new trial.

"He raped a girl and killed an entire family, and he got only life in prison. ... This is an unjust trial," said Mustafa Kamel Shabib al-Jabouri, leader of the Awakening Council in Yusufiya. "We demand a new trial."

In this case too of course.
