Ultimate Fighting Championship held a media con- ference call today for their upcoming pay-per-view event, “UFC 99: The Comeback”, scheduled to take place on June 13, 2009 in Cologne, Germany. Along with UFC executives, the main event’s stars, Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva participated in the call, as well as main card fighters Marcus Davis and Dan Hardy. Following a report from Yahoo Sports yes- terday, UFC fans and followers have been abuzz about Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson’s participation as a contestant on the approaching season of “The Ultimate Fighter”. The fighters in the call weighed in with their perspectives on the aging neophyte’s chances.
Of each of the fighters, Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press, asked their thoughts on the report.
Rich Franklin: “Given Kimbo’s history…this is probably where he should be. It was a smart move to put him on the show; it’s going to pull in ratings. From a business point of view it was probably the best thing you can do, but I think at this point in time he doesn’t deserve to just go jump in the UFC and fight. He kind of has to earn his way to get there and “Ultimate Fighter” is the best place to do it."
Marcus Davis: “I pretty much agree with Rich. It’s a great business move with the UFC…and it’s all relative to who the other fighters are that get on that show. It’s either going to…really expose that he really wasn’t prepared for MMA at all as a whole, or if they have the easier opponents in there…he could once again come out of it looking like he’s some kind of killer. Definitely I think that he needed to go through something like this before he should be fighting in the UFC.”
Dan Hardy: “To be honest I’m just excited to see what’s going to happen. “The Ultimate Fighter” has always been a good show to watch for surprises and strange events. I think Kimbo Slice in the house is really going to stir things up and make some interesting fights.”
Wanderlei Silva: “The thing is, it’s good because he’s a polemic fighter; he’s an exciting fighter. I like his style. He’s aggressive in his fights. I think he [needs] to be fighting more with professional guys. He’s so tough he will put a lot of guys at heavyweight in trouble."
The filming for the tenth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” began June 1. The coaches are former Light Heavyweight Champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and “Sugar” Rashad Evans. They will work closely with the sixteen heavyweight contestants vying to be the next UFC superstar. The official cast list has not yet been confirmed, but UFC President Dana White previously announced that the season will debut on Spike TV on September 16, 2009, following UFC Fight Night 19.
