Tom Atencio’s fight
June 29, 2009 – 1:01 pm by fightlinker

Tom Atencio sure does take a licking in the first round … he got KO’d on his feet near the start of the fight but managed to come back to his senses in impressive fashion. He doesn’t seem to have many effective finishing tools but his cardio was all he needed in the end to win this fight. His opponent ran out of gas halfway through the second round and actually quit on the stool rather than answer the bell for the third. The word is Atencio broke his opponent’s nose, but his corner manhandled it pretty good so I’m not so sure about that.

Tom said something interesting after the fight to the effect of: “It’s not the critic who counts, it’s the people who go out there and do things.” That reminds me of one of my favorite quotes, which is pretty ironic considering my job:

“In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so.”

Yes, it is lame that one of my favorite quotes comes from a Disney movie about a mouse that cooks. But fuck y’all. I dig it. And I dig guys like Tom Atencio doing whatever they wanna do, no matter how cool / dumb / financially ruinous it may be.
