UFC's Fertitta addresses Fedor

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quote:
Ultimate Fighting Championship principal owner Lorenzo Fertitta is ready to deliver his state of the UFC talk today, a moment that allows him to bask in the mainstream attention given to tonight's UFC 100 card.

But the sport's most devout followers still wonder why a giant named Fedor Emelianenko (above right) is not part of UFC.

Emelianenko has a pay-per-view fight scheduled next month in Anaheim for an Orange County shirt company, Affliction. The quiet Russian heavyweight told me recently he doesn't want to commit to a six-fight contract to join UFC.

Fertitta explained to me in a rare interview a few weeks ago why he's seeking a six-fight arrangement with Emelianenko.

"Right now, Fedor's completely irrelevant to the public," Fertitta said. "His pay-per-view numbers have been 12,000, 30,000, and now Affliction is saying he'll get 100,000 [against Josh Barnett]. I'll take the under-70,000. We average 500,000 buys and we expect 1 million for this one.

"Fedor wants to use UFC for a fight to be relevant, and then leave and do his own thing. That's not our business model."

Fertitta explained it takes a few fights to build name recognition in his sport, which still craves mainstream attention. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson had an audience among MMA hard-core fans when he joined the organization, but few others really cared.

"We spend more money for marketing than anyone has ever spent on Fedor," Fertitta said. "If I bring in Fedor, we'll make him the most recognizable face in MMA, but we also want to recoup on our investment. You wouldn't sign Tom Brady for one game. So why do I want to sign this guy for one fight?"

Brady analogy is poor.  One UFC Fedor fight is more like a season for Brady in the NFL, not one game...

UFC wants Fedor, but has a really weird way of showing it.

Fedor doesn't want or need the UFC.

There is a cloud over the UFC: the best fighter in the world doesn't want to be part of the UFC.

Will Fedor ever be in the UFC?  Not on UFC's one-sided disrespectful terms.

Sooner or later it has to happen. If only because Fedor-Lesnar would be the biggest fight in the sport's history. Maybe a compromise of a three fight contract. Fedor needs a one-fight can to get the feel of the cage anyway. His first fight in a cage against Brock's big ass would potentially spell disaster for Fedor.

There's a cloud over Fedor:  no one knows whether he's the best fighter in the world b/c he's not fighting the world's other top talents like the UFC has to offer.

I think regardless of the fact that fedor has one more fight on his current contract, the fact that a dominant fixture in the UFC has emerged will force Fedor to realize that the "MMA show" is gonna go on without him unless he throws his hat into the mix....

Couture/Mir/Noguira/ are all just regurgitated fighters taking turns being on top....

with lesnar surfacing, it sets up a true fight to see who's the #1 guy around..

Fedor trains in a cage.

But fighting in a cage = different, so you've got a good point.

You don't understand the business very well do you?

The UFC wants to protect their investment..they are not 'one sided disrespectful' terms.
Why would they sign him to one fight? Nothing good would come out of that.

Besides it would take several fights for him to be a big draw anyways. You forget he is a nobody to the majority of UFC fans.

You don't understand Fedor.  Neither does White, which is why he isn't going to the UFC.

The guy (Brock) gets knocked out by his sparring partners.  Yeah, I would say 'protect' is the right word where Fedor is concerned.

White does not have proper respect for Fedor.  Nor does the UFC overall.

Casual fans, maybe.  Paying fans oughta know who he is.  Rabid fans all know who he is.  Too bad White don't know him well enough.

Not  fighting the world's other top talents?  Where you been?

$$$ talks to White.  Only language he knows.  Trouble is he thinks that's all that all other people care about.  He blew it with Fedor with his insults and one-sided contract terms.  That cloud's gonna be over the UFC for a long time.

I think its obvious the UFC needs Fedor, not the other way around. Hes destroyed every heavyweight the UFC has had to offer in the past 5 years except coture who would have gotten his ass kicked anyway. Who else is Lesnar going to fight besides Carwin and maybe Kongo? After that theres nobody-- And whose to say brock even beats them?

When Fedor has a market share in Affliction and doesnt care about mainstream exposure- Is undefeated and the best pound for pound in the world, why would he ever accept a contract with the UFC except on his terms?

After a while ( and for anyone who follows MMA this came to pass like a year ago) people are going to get bored with the heavyweight division and stop paying attention to it. Now that Brock has beaten Mir, theres maybe one more fight in the heavyweight division that I would even pay attention to and thats it. A Fedor Brock ppv event would absolutely shatter any previous PPV records and make the UFC even more recognizable than it is now. Fedor doesnt give a fuck. He makes a good living- he gets to train Sambo when he wants, he doesnt care about exposure, and anyone with half a brain that is more than a casual fan knows hes number one in the world by a country mile.

It has nothing to do with the UFC not wanting Fedor...They just want an exclusive multi-year contract that he won't agree to.
Personally, I think Fedor is just collecting easy paydays.

What was it Fedor said in regards to the UFC offer? 'I won't let Dana White and the UFC own my soul'
