Nearly 137,000 unemployed workers in California are due to max out their jobless benefits over the next five months, with the biggest wave — 61,096 — potentially getting kicked off the rolls the last week of August, according to state Employment Development Department estimates.
EDD doesn’t have a precise way of determining who will run out of benefits. Based on the agency’s best guess as of July 14, the number will begin to build in California in mid-August with a huge surge Aug. 30.
Another 9,740 could lose their benefits the following week. Thousands more could exhaust their unemployment each week through Nov. 22.
