Now Suicide Bombers in Russia
« on: August 17, 2009, 08:40:06 PM »
Suicide bombers just blew up a police station in Southern Russia leaving a huge crater in the ground.

A truck filled with explosives detonated as the police were lining up for morning training.

What is this world coming to?  Lots of Russian news going on right now, suicide bombing, transformers blowing up, planes colliding into each other... what gives?

Not really. I can understand some written french, but to listen and understand fluently... no.
If in a pinch, I'll get my 4 & 6 yr. old neices to translate. {blush}  :-[ They are both completely fluent in french.

You can get the jist of what's written in French pretty well without any knowledge of it.  There are enough words that obviously are similar enough or have familiar roots.  I didn't realize this until several years back when I went to get something translated, it wasn't hard to know before getting the translation what was being said.  I guess it shocked me some, because by the way it sounds, I wouldn't have thought I would have had a clue whatsoever.

Plus living in Canada which is officially bi-lingual, written French is all around you on everything, ...and I mean EVERYTHING, so it's real easy to understand. then too, you have the latin roots to compare it to when you're reading it. With the exception of English, I find it much easier to read & comprehend foreign languages than to understand the spoken word. I used to speak french as a kid. I was a verb conjugating maniac, ...even when i didn't know the meaning of the verb I was conjugating. As long as it was a regular verb, I could conjugate it and pronounce it with a perfect Parisian accent. lol. Then when i was 16, and started learning Italian, ...I lost all my French. and my pronunciation became really wierd. I know find I pronounce some italian words a little too similarly to Spanish. lol oh well. I try to keep up by reading Italian language newspapers.

I can see how having it all around would be a plus in understanding it too.  Kind of like Spanish down here.  If it wasn't all over in some areas, I would know a lot less.  I started some lessons a few months back but have been to busy to keep it up which is a bummer.  I really want to learn Spanish.

On a side note, I think French is an ugly language.  For some reason I cringe when I hear it.  I hate the way it sounds.  I only mention that because so many seem to think it sounds cool or romantic and I never really thought so myself.  I have no beef against the people so it's not one of those dislikes based on the freedom fry movement.  Just never really liked the sound.  But I do love the way Spanish sounds.

French is a beautiful language to speak-- I grew up around it and I can understand a bit. These days, the only things I can remember how to say are "Do you want some icecream" and how to count up to fifty.

Italian is also beautiful-- although its my heritage, I took one 6 credit italian class in college and recieved a C- ( I later persuaded the professor to bump me up to a mercy C) lol.

Both my parents were multilingual and one major regret that I have is that I never learned how to speak another language.

I think French is an absolutely beautiful sounding language. I much more prefer Parisian French to Quebecois French.

I also think Italian is a very beautiful language. As far as Spanish goes, I have difficulty with Mexican, Peruvian, & Bolivian Spanish, ...but I love the sound of Argentinian Spanish. I find it easier to pick up words here & there when it's Argentinian Spanish. Last night I heard a girl talking to her sister. They were flipping back & forth between some language & English. As I approached I asked them what language they were speaking, and it was Urdu. It sounded so beautiful & lyrical. I don't know if she was speaking authentic Indian Urdu, ...or if it was a North Americanized version... you know... second generation never stepped foot in India, heavy English accent kind of Urdu, but it sounded absolutely beautiful.

I'm not too fond of some of the hard sounds found in German. I'm always scared the other person is going to spit a wad or something. lol. And some of the Asian languages sound to my ear like people are arguing.
