After a Hundred men's Lifetimes In Analyzing maybe we can understand the true nature of mankind. After the goal is reached you become immortal and move on because there is nothing left here to learn. Some may be closer, some may be just starting out delving into these quests
for Knowledge.

which type of knowledge?

i feel the tree of knowledge which adam ate the apple from, although metaphorical raises interesting questions. after mankind (adam) obtained knowledge he lost his imortality and was cast from heaven. Also mentioned is the tree of life which was hidden. I feel humanity has fell from grace, and although we are gaining scientific knowledge at faster and faster rates, our spiritual knowlege is dwindling. If we ever find the tree of life, we may lose all connection/chance to god/enlightenment  :'(

yes, mankind has already had it's peak as a spiritual/ knowing/ insightful entity. It's just us buffoons left now that still got things to learn, and that needs to be here...  Were the spiritual stubborn, resistant, errant ones.
