Peasants' Revolt 1381

"In some areas the tax collectors were simply ignored or beaten up by villagers".

"A great local lord John de Bamptoun set himself up in the town of Brentwood in Essex and demanded the men of neighboring towns come to him with come lists of names and their tax money.  Over a hundred men responded to his orders-not to pay the taxes but to inform him that they had no intention of doing so.  Optimistically, de Bamptoun ordered is two sergeants-at-arms to arrest the hundred villagers and put them in prison.  The crowd angrily attacked the royal officers and de Bamptoun counted himself lucky to be allowed to flee back to London."
