Actually in terms of 0-60, yep.  To me the Mclaren F1 IS in a league of it's own, but it's times are now being eclipsed by lesser cars
That engine looks incredible - I'd forgotten that it was actually designed by BMW.
Isuzu tried making a V12 for Mclaren they were so pressed!
 
you know the S70/2 was a redesign of the S70/1, BMW V12 that was in the 8 series. Mclaren said the S70/1 was too long and heavy so Mr. Rorsche had it redesigned.

By that time when this car was made McLaren were working with Honda … a Gordon Murray wanted an engine with 550hp that weighed 25KG … Honda didn’t /couldn’t do it … so he turned to his friend at BMW … he got an engine which was a bit heavier but produced 627hp … the gear was done by another company which designed the gear only for this car … the company still makes cars … but it didn’t get the credit it deserved for the gear box … and that company which a lot of people don’t know is … believe it or not is “Wiseman” !!!

Even the sound system was custom made only for the McLaren F1 by Kenwood so it would be lighter than regular audio systems.


Another version of the GTR was made under the name “Longtail” ... which were produced later (in 97 if I am not mistaking) is looked different with the added body kit … only 2 of those were converted to road use ... an orange and a greenish black … some info were out that it had 6.0 destroked engine + a X-Track sequential gearbox … but not sure


There were a total 106 McLarens build … y 106??? Cause they needed to ahave a 100 car production line to enter Lemans … so they did a 100 cars (F1=64, GTR=28, Longtail=3)


We got 2 of them in Bahrain which belong to 2 of the royal family … one is a regular street F1 and the other is the old GTR

Recently there was a race by Top Gear in Abu Dhabi between the McLaren F1 & the Bugatti Veyron … the race was for a mile but however the 1 year old car managed to stay in front for abt 2/3 of the race

I have the book "Driving Ambition" by Gordon Murray, which is the book that details the whole mclaren F1 from conception to the Longtails final days to the record setting 240.1 mph. The Longtails were eclipsed by the Mercedes CLK GTR and the Porsche 911 GT-1, in fact the F1 was not supposed to be a race car, Mclaren set out to make the world's fastest road car, and the GTR race cars were having a hard time beating the Ferrari F40 LM's in FIA racing

I remember seeing that one off vette in a Dupont Registry Magazine back in the late 90's. I also remember the 218 mph that Mario got in a registered Ameritech Mclaren F1, I have that article, it was Road and Track test, to be fair, I think Mario said that he could pull another gear. The record run was done at VW test track on March 31st, 1998. The same test track that Bugatti used to get the 254 mph record. The  Mclaren car was a test car called XP5 (experimental prototype #5), and in early days of the the program the car got 220 mph with less Hp.

Interesting to note, cars like the Jaguar XJ220 had their cats taken off for their record runs, and I think the Calloway did as well. Hennessy and ligenfelter still do that.

I am going to take the conversion to the poor man's level  ;D

1.  Why did Toyota stop producing the Supra? growing up I loved seeing that car on the streets.
2.  What ever happened to the Acura NSX? too pricey and too under powered?
3.  In NY the BMW M5 are becoming a dime a dozen, I still want one  :P

the car that did the record was not a Longtail ... it was the final McLaren F1 prototype called XP5 ... the green one … the removed the rev limiter which was 7500rpm ... it achieved the 240mph at 7800 rpm ... and the tiers were Michelin not Goodyear
Andy Wallace (racer) piloted it down the 9 km straight at Volkswagen’s Ehra test track in Wolfsburg, Germany

exactly !! no customer car to my knowledge has been top speed tested other than the one by Mario Andretti and all of the customer cars have their rev limiters intact so none of them can do 240 MPH , the pics you posted of the XP5 if I'm not mistaken is at the McLaren factory where it sits to this day

1) Price was too expensive at the time, around 50k in 93 for Turbo version, but later lowered to 40k in 97. Also slow sales, and again, too expensive.
2) NSX discontinued in 2005, too pricey and underpowered, but when it came out was a hell of a car, but like I said.
3) M5 is a great car, V10 on its last year, most likely a V8 turbo in the future.

I know that, you might have meant confused--i meant thast the book goes from start to finish, finish being the 240.1 mph that XP5 did that I mentioned.

It got too big, too heavy, and and too expensive...with only 320 HP. Plus the Inline 6 wasn't going, nor did it meet the strigent  emissions tests that Japan had. They had to recert the engine to put in my IS300 (2JZ-GE).  That's why Toyota (lexus) went with a V6 with the next gen Lexus IS.

As far as the Next M5, chances are it will have the Twin Turbo V8 that's found in the new X6 M and X5 M--producing 555 HP in those, it maybe 575 in the M5.
