$120K PRIZE MONEY AT AMATEUR SHOW?
« on: October 22, 2009, 10:45:58 AM »
Is it real that the WBPSF is giving out $120,000 in prize money at their amateur world championship??  This would make it the third largest in prize money behind the Arnold and the Olympia.

How can they give out so much money at an amateur event?

If they give out this much at an amateur show, how much will they give out at their pro shows?

Isn't there a legal definition of the word "amateur"?

I could be wrong but "amatuer bodybuilder" was once  considered to be any competitive body builder
who did not receive something of financial value as a result of entering that contest.

A professional body builder was any competitive bodybuilder who accepted an award that had some financial value, but some old timers considered any competitive bodybuilder who merely entered a contest offering "awards of value" to be a "pro" even if he did not receive an award.

And then some thought that if a competitive bodybuilder won a contest and refused to accept the award, he was henceforth considered to be or not to be a pro.

And then you have the IBFF which only considers competitive bodybuilders as pros upon acceptance as such by the IFBB organization.

Anyone know the present legal definitions of "professional athlete" and "amateur athlete"?

And if there has ever been a court case concerning this subject matter?

Thanks

legally, no.  there are no laws in the US or most other countries defining what it is to be an amateur athlete.  its up to each sports organization to decide.

in the AAU, it was even more strict.  you couldn't make a living of any kind from you muscles.  Being a personal trainer, owning a gym, being paid to endorse a product, even being paid for a photo shoot would cause you to lose your amateur status.
