Anyone have a Kindle?
« on: December 07, 2009, 06:38:29 PM »
Would this be a good gift for someone who wears reading glasses or is the type too small?

EDIT:  I see there are other types of digital books...what is the best?

Thanks!

It would be a great gift for an avid reader (even those that wear reading glasses).  The font size can be adjusted.

The two best readers are the Kindle and the Sony Touch.  I checked both out before ultimately buying the Kindle2.  Here is why I like the Kindle is better:

It's cheaper.
The screen contrast is way better.  It looks just like the page of a paperback with no glare.
The selection of books blows the Touch away.  I can browse Amazon's selection almost anywhere (no internet connection required).
Average time for my book downloads is ~45 seconds per book.
Battery life is insanely long.
Read to me and mp3 playback.

Thank you so much for this info kimura!

I see that you can buy certain accessories such as a light (for some reason I thought it would light up), cover, screen protector, power adaptor etc.

What accessories should I buy?

Is $259 (amazon price) a good price for the Kindle2?

I think that's less than the original price when it was introduced last year.

I have a friend who LOVES hers.  She reads at least 2 books a week!  Def. need a cover/jacket, just like a cell phone.

All you need for the Kindle is this light:

http://www.amazon.com/Mighty-Bright-XtraFlex2-Kindle-Version/dp/B000TXZIDM/ref=kinw_dp_W1291_

I am averaging 2 books per week on the thing.  I have not watched any TV since I got it (2 months ago) and I use to watch tons of TV.

My mother researched and decided on the Nook from B&N.   With that one you can also share a book with someone else who has a Nook.  They then get 2 weeks to read it from when they downloaded it from yours.

He opened the "Kindle Cover" first and went on and on about how he had always wanted a Kindle Cover.  He didn't even know what it was  ::)

Since then he still hasn't used it.  Maybe he will download some stuff before his next vacation and then realize he couldn't live w/o it 8)

My friend didn't want one at first (rec'd as gift), but quickly realized she couldn't live w/o it.  She's already read several hundred books.  Crazy
