The bill to watch will come from Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), chairman of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee. Schumer, who has been working with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), has already set out principles for reform that include rigorous workplace and border enforcement, a realistic assessment of the nation's need for skilled and unskilled labor, a commitment to controlling the future flow of illegal immigration and bringing millions of people away from the edges of society. The Schumer-Graham proposals have promise; we hope 2010 will see the immigration reform the nation so badly needs.

I think it was Pat Buchanan who suggested that we, not only deport illegals and cut them off from their source of sustenance (i.e. welfare), but also halt all immigration--leagl and otherwise--for a few years until our country becomes more populated with natural-born Americans. Alas, our pacifistic government would have none of it.

All the ones convicted of crimes should be deported automatically.

The rest should be given the option to buy their way into staying here-- ( Pay like a 50,000$ fine collected as a tax over the course of like 5 years for every single person here illegally), give 5 years of service to the military, or be deported.

GW, very good ideas.

33, I highly doubt any civil war 2 will come out of any amnesty bill.  It almost passed two years back, and most people didn't seem to give a shit.

240 - you have an awful memory.

All hell broke loose on the right when W tried amnesty in 2005.  Remember the famous "vigilante" comment by Jorge?

At that time we had 5% UE.  Now we have 10% UE and are in far worse shape fiscally.

For POFS-in-Chief to push this along with Schumer and the RINOS will mean war.

I said 'most' people.  Most people knew who was in the American idol finals then too.  :(

Amnesty = horrible idea.  However, after watching politics for 15 years, I predict it'll be a hot issue for 5 weeks, it will pass, and in 6 months everyone will forget about it.  Hell, if Dubya had proclaimed a Victory in iraq in 2006 and pulled out, the repub would have won easily in 2008.

Nonsense 240 - with what we are facing, things are different now.  Millions are broke and jobless and hungry.  In 2005 when El Jeffe pushed amnesty the economy was still gangbusters.

Additionally, people are paying more attention now.

More ppl are paying attention.  Maybe 8% instead of 6% of people.  If congress can make up some BS reason why amnesty will cure the economy, 1/2 the population will buy into it, you know that.

It's inevitable - in all civilizations.

Personally, I hope we can stave off such a collapse for say, 200 or 250 years...

33, I'm well aware the economic ship should have sunk in 2001 (911 prevented this), could have sunk in 2004 had saddam dropped the dollar (iraq invastion prevented this) and could have sunk in 2008 (bailout prevented this).

I am optimistic that our govt's moves will prevent any major dollar dumps and subsequent collapse.  I think we'll see a gradual decline (and let's all admit, the borrowing of the past 30 years has the true value of a buck way lower than it is now).  And I'm hoping there is no major collapse - we have more bases and weapons than everyone else, and I'm hoping no country decides it's worth the war we'll declare if they were to dunk our economy.

People have believed the dollar would collapse for decades.  It hasn't happened yet.  Whatever our leaders do - they've prevented a collapse so far, thank God.  I hope it continues to stay afloat.  I understand it'll sink one day.  I'm just hoping it's 100 or 200 years from now!

Instead of worrying about some country dunking the US economy the US should be working on fixing it's economy with the fundamentals in place. But it is not. This is what it is doing:

1. Printing money
2. Paying huge bonuses to service based banking sector.
3. Still outsourcing jobs and manufacturing
4. Not repairing or enhancing infrastructure significantly. (roads, new mass transit)
5. Raising taxes on citizens.

And then if this all collapses they declare war on another country. How nice. If you champion this you don't deserve to be a super power.

I agree with all 5 points there.  it's a welfare state from top to bottom - congress to the alleys.  however, I would prefer we elect a john thune and let him responsibly turn the ship.  I would prefer NOT to put in a bailout supporter like Palin.

Exactly.  For anyone to cheer on what this govt is doing is disgusting.  They are racing us off the cliff at breakneck speed and we have people like 240 who somehow think massa OBama going to fix it all by some magic trick.

I never said Obama was going to fix it with a magic trick.  Can you quote me on that?

I simply stated I am hopeful the govt will keep the idiotic borrowing train on the track.

33, you continually re-state my positions inaccurately.
