Scout leader jailed for boy abuse
A former scout leader who "groomed" a teenage boy for sex while taking him away for kayaking trips has been jailed for four years at Norwich Crown Court.
Julien Pike, 37, of Northcote Road, Norwich, began the abuse when the boy was 13 and it lasted for almost three years, the court heard.
Pike admitted five counts of sexual activity with a child.
Judge Peter Jacobs told him: "It is very sad you used the boy's interest in kayaking as a means of seducing him."
The court heard Pike met the boy in 2004 and took him on trips in the UK and abroad in tents, hostels and hotels, during which he was the youth's sole custodian.
Adults vetted
An impact statement read out to the court said the youth had since become withdrawn and suffered from anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder and was on medication.
Pike was also put on The sex offenders register indefinitely and must not work with children or have unsupervised contact with a child aged under 16.
A Scout Association spokesman said earlier: "The association is aware that Julien Pike has pleaded guilty to the charges laid before him.
"We have assisted Norfolk police during their investigation.
"Pike was suspended from any form of contact with the movement as soon as we were aware of the arrest.
"The Scout Association carries out stringent vetting of all adults who work with young people."
