The chinese food industry is horrifying, the melamine in milk scandal has made the news, but there are loads of things we dont hear about.
I saw this documentary about a company who was selling liquid eqq whites to companies in china. basically they were mixing various industrial chemicals together to make a liquid with similar consistency to liquid egg whites, then selling it on. All sorts of things like drain cleaner was being used, and often the restaurants using the stuff wouldnt realise untill they served it up to a customer.
To make wholemeal wheat flour, they took white flour and then added some tar to the flour to darken it up. Nice :-)
Just like all other aspects of manufacturing which they dominate, the chinese want to make food production another dominant industry, 75% of the worlds Vitamin C is produced in China. Which is one of the reasons I have stopped taking a lot of supplements, as there is next to no quality control in china. Plus they will happily cut corners by any means necessary to make a quick dollar.
