Fla. gov's abortion view flips in Senate race
« on: January 15, 2010, 04:21:13 AM »
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Gov. Charlie Crist is saying that he wants to change abortion laws if he's elected to the U.S. Senate, a change from what he said during his run for governor.

Crist's campaign issued a release Friday that said: "As Florida's next U.S. senator, Charlie Crist will fight for pro-life legislative efforts."

Four years ago, Crist said he wanted to change hearts, not abortion laws.

It's the latest in political shifts for Crist. He is a populist governor and moderate Republican who is describing himself as a solid conservative now that he's lost significant ground to former House Speaker Marco Rubio in the Republican primary.

The Crist campaign defended the statement, noting the release also mentioned the governor's progress in increasing adoptions.
