MuscleMaster.com, Inc. has recalled 17 dietary supplements that may contain steroids, according to this recent press release issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The ingredients the FDA is concerned about are the same ones involved in last November's recall of 65 supplements sold on Bodybuilding.com, an online forum and store for bodybuilders: "Superdrol," Madrol," Tren," "Androstenedione," and/or Turinabol,"
Unlike foods and drug products, dietary supplements are not approved for safety or efficacy before they hit the market. Instead, under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), it's up to the manufacturer to make sure the product is safe. The FDA can only take action after the products are on store shelves. More than 10,000 dietary supplement products are available.
Steroids are a concern because they can lead to acute liver injury or cause other serious effects, including male infertility and masculinization of women.
The recalled supplements were sold between June 1,2009 and Nov. 17, 2009.
