February 10, 2010, 10:59 am Clueless

I’m with Simon Johnson here: how is it possible, at this late date, for Obama to be this clueless?

The lead story on Bloomberg right now contains excerpts from an interview with Business Week which tells us:

President Barack Obama said he doesn’t “begrudge” the $17 million bonus awarded to JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon or the $9 million issued to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. CEO Lloyd Blankfein, noting that some athletes take home more pay.

The president, speaking in an interview, said in response to a question that while $17 million is “an extraordinary amount of money” for Main Street, “there are some baseball players who are making more than that and don’t get to the World Series either, so I’m shocked by that as well.”

“I know both those guys; they are very savvy businessmen,” Obama said in the interview yesterday in the Oval Office with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which will appear on newsstands Friday. “I, like most of the American people, don’t begrudge people success or wealth. That is part of the free- market system.”

Obama sought to combat perceptions that his administration is anti-business and trumpeted the influence corporate leaders have had on his economic policies. He plans to reiterate that message when he speaks to the Business Roundtable, which represents the heads of many of the biggest U.S. companies, on Feb. 24 in Washington.

Oh. My. God.

First of all, to my knowledge, irresponsible behavior by baseball players hasn’t brought the world economy to the brink of collapse and cost millions of innocent Americans their jobs and/or houses.

And more specifically, not only has the financial industry has been bailed out with taxpayer commitments; it continues to rely on a taxpayer backstop for its stability. Don’t take it from me, take it from the rating agencies:

The planned overhaul of US financial rules prompted Standard & Poor’s to warn on Tuesday it might downgrade the credit ratings of Citigroup and Bank of America on concerns that the shake-up would make it less likely that the banks would be bailed out by US taxpayers if they ran into trouble again.

The point is that these bank executives are not free agents who are earning big bucks in fair competition; they run companies that are essentially wards of the state. There’s good reason to feel outraged at the growing appearance that we’re running a system of lemon socialism, in which losses are public but gains are private. And at the very least, you would think that Obama would understand the importance of acknowledging public anger over what’s happening.

But no. If the Bloomberg story is to be believed, Obama thinks his key to electoral success is to trumpet “the influence corporate leaders have had on his economic policies.”

We’re doomed.

BRUTAL.
________________________ ________________________ ______-

179.Pat CavallaroVienna, VAFebruary 10th, 20101:38 pmPeople, people, people. Step back and look at everything that has occurred since Obama's inauguration:

> He selected all big Wall Street supporters to be his financial advisers;

> He selected Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff. Rahm is a Blue Dog--translation: conservative hiding behind the Democratic label;

> He pushed his base, his supporters under the bus with his sacrifice of the single payer option in healthcare before any debate even started--even though a majority of ALL Americans wanted single payer;

> He did the same with the Public Option;

> He gave away the farm to PhRMA and did it in secret, back-room deals—so much for transparency;

> He pushed the "stimulus" but forgot to include the public in it—the stimulus was welfare for Wall Street, AIG (and European companies) and the banks only;

> He stepped back and left all healthcare negotiations to Max Baucus (another conservative) and the Baucus gang of 6 to draft the healthcare bill ensuring that the medical industrial complex would be properly served while the people were left to pay through the nose if they had jobs, or to drop dead like flies because they couldn't afford health insurance. The goals: For Wall Street, greater profits; for the people, put up the money or drop dead and relieve government of the problem of a surplus population;

> He sent Rahm to the Democratic caucus to call them F#*#ing Retards because the liberals were leaning on the Blue Dogs for being conservatives in Democratic garb;

That is only a partial list of all the Republican actions on the part of our HOPEless and CHANGEless president. Step back, look at everything, and you will find that Obama is getting everything he wants. He is far from stupid. He is not blind or misled. Obama is a conservative who hoodwinked all the voters who chose to believe him when he said YES, WE CAN. We failed to look beyond his rhetoric to the man who played a skillful game of Snooker the People.

I once loved to see and hear him. I longed for the day he would win the presidency and all Americans, black and white, would finally make it to the mountain top. Now, I see only a selfish egotist who wanted money and power, and his voice makes me cringe. There is no "analysis" that can explain everything he has done while turning his back on the people who put him in office. Stop looking so closely at every little thing and trying to put it into some context to justify why a Democratic President would be caving in to the Republicans so willingly.

STEP BACK and you will see the real Barack Obama. I can truly say that in the 67 years I have been on this planet, I have never felt so utterly betrayed by an individual, a man, I once dearly loved and trusted with my fate and the fate of the country.

33, listen slowly, because I've said it many times and you must have missed it:

Obama is a tool of the far-left interests and big banks.
Just like the GOp candidate will no doubt be a tool od far-right interests and big banks.
They all are, to get the $ to reach that level.

Now, I have been saying obama's STRATEGY will be to employ a number of populist moves in 2010 and 2012 to keep seats and his own job.  He will try to move to center.  Outside of these comments to Bloomberg which he attempts to suck up to business owners "I don't begrudge people's success of wealth".   He's made a few moves in the past 3 weeks to appear populist.  Not changing his core beliefs - just making moves to win back independents.

I never said the guy is going to change his core beliefs - rather, he will shift his political strategy to one to regain independet voters when he needs them - in even numbered years.  You seem to have a problem differentiating between the two ;)

aside from today's comments, he's done a good job.

and did you see the poll... 47% of americans trust obama to do a better job fighting terror... compared with 42% repubs in congress.

How the F does a lib like that get american's backing on the war on terror?  Suddenly, a person like Palin or pawlenty has a DISADVANTAGE on national security compared with obama.

240 really needs to send his resume to the WH.  He does a far better job than Gibbs.
