Hypoglycemia
« on: February 17, 2010, 01:24:48 PM »
Recently I've been dealing with this crap lately. I believe it is due to my change in diet. I'm bumping up my carbs from 30 a day to roughly 100 and I've catch little episodes. I need to be more consistent though.

Has anyone experienced this?

I know what to do when my blood sugar gets too low. Eat a snack with some form of sugar.

Hopefully i don't have this crap forever.

Thanks.

Always eat protein with the carb, along with a little bit of fat and you'll be able to regulate things much better.  Having just a carb/sugar by itself just makes things worse.

I'm not a big drinker but I drank this past weekend and my blood sugar droped due to the alcohol. I had read this at a medical site. Sooooo I guess I need to watch my alcohol consumption

Again, have the alcohol (in moderation of course) with protein and fat and your blood sugar will be more stable.  Alcohol acts like a carb on blood sugar.    So, for instance, for every beer, have around 7-10 grams of protein and 3-5 grams of fat.  Not much is needed.  Whatever you do, don't just munch on crap like chips when you're drinking.  Ever hear of a carb hangover?

straight carbs helps immediatley then the crash starts.  I've only had a few bouts, but mostly because i didn't have enough carbs after injecting insulin.   Hypoglycemia is a instance, not a disease or chronic problem.

It sounds more like you just have low blood sugar occasionally, thats not that serious. I have had a full blown hypoglycemic episode, landed in the emergency room with a blood sugar level of 17. I took 2 IV bags of glucose to get to the 50 range and they fed me for 2 hours to get it in the 80's. I believe anything below 70 is considered borderline low, the Doc said if my wife hadn't gotten me to the ER i wouldve slipped into a coma and possibly died. A lot of guys get a little light headed when they cut the carbs down and immediately think,"oh, I'm going hypo." Trust me, if you go hypo, you won't even know. You become so confused and disoriented, you don't even know whats going on. Just up your carbs or if it were me, since you are so low on carbs anyway, just go keto. After a couple of days, that lightheadedness goes away and you feal normal, at least I do on a keto. My little hypo episode wasn't caused by insulin, but shoddy advice from a bald, synthol filled snake oil salesman with quirky names for all his supplements.

Man I'm glad it didn't get to that state. I'm more cautious with it now and I have 4 occurrences so for in the past two months. I'll get nausea then confused and lightheaded and my heart races then I start to sweat like a pig. Then I eat a piece of candy and poof all gone.  But with all of you guys help I got a handle on it now.

Thanks

Just to be clear - the quick simple sugar (glucose is best) will bring you out of that state if you're already there.  BUT to PREVENT yourself from getting there in the first place, do the protein, carb & fat thing.
