Hardgainer to mesomorph
« on: March 01, 2010, 01:52:49 AM »
I have always been a hardgainer. I would eat everything, train hard and still had the struggle for every pound. But of course I always stayed shredded without any effort at all.

Now i'm getting a bit older and my metabolism is slowing down. I started bulking up about 6 months ago and i've packed on about 25 quality pounds. This would have been unheard of before. I'm even getting a little bit of fat over my abs which i've never had before.

Is this typical, for a hardgainer to shift into a mesmorph as his metabolism slows down? It seems like for a hardgainer, this shift would be good for building muscle. What do you think? I'm talking about natural training too.

This has happened to me, although, not as much. Once your metabolism slows down, you can can some weight, but also fat as well.

I'm loving it.

People always talk about how when you hit 30 your test levels drop and you can't make the big gains anymore. But for me it's like my growth potential has just been unleashed.
Exactly, I'm 33, and I found that I can gain weight now, but I have not been as consistent as I was 24-29. It's the bulking part that can mess one up SO be careful on that, you can't eat like you did at 25-28, And watch the blood presure as well.

Yeah i'm eating clean. Lots of nuts, rice, lean meat, eggs, milk, bread, fruits and veggies, trying to keep my diet really healthy and balanced even though i'm bulking. I stopped drinking coffee and other caffiene drinks and I am all around taking better care of my health now. Stopped getting wasted off alcohol in clubs all the time, stopped taking boatloads of drugs. I can feel how i'm not invincible anymore like I used to be.

Good.

Ah.. reality bites, eh? Yes, you’ll be able to pack on mass easier as you age.. that was the case for me. Funny, as soon as I was able to gain weight easily.. I lost interest in it. Now I see gaining weight as a negative.

I would have thought that the opposite was true - your test levels drop as you get older making it harder to put on quality muscle. As test levels drop, estrogen levels increase somewhat, makeing the body retain fat and making it harder for it to shift said fat levels.

I remember in my teens I could put on muscle without even following a proper diet - just training and rest alone was enough to stimulate growth - nowadays (as I approach the grand old age of 33) my diet has to be stricter and I have to watch my carb and fat intake closely otherwise I just end up losing the plot with it all.

There is no such thing as a typical hardgainer. You can be considered a a hardgainer when you have a hard time building muscle. This can have a wide range of reasons, usually a combination of: eating too little, not enough sleep, overtraining, drinking, crappy genetics, etc. In your case it's possible that your high metabolism prevented you from establishing a good environment for muscle growth.

On the other hand you have to question your 25 lbs gain, in what way is it quality? most likely 2/3 is fat and you have to wonder if you want that BF increase along with your muscle growth, fi not you might have to dial in your eating habits a bit.

My friend welcome to reality! this 25lbs of "quality muscle" is mostly fat..trust me.. I am nearly 40 and yes putting on weight is easy, taking it off is even harder.  For now you think that you are gaining muscle, in a few years you will see that it was mostly be deposited in your mid section and around your nipples (no homo) :(

what you are entering is the "I am over 35+ and can't stay lean so perma bulking is not that bad" phase.

when you get to the stage staying that "epic leanz" becomes daily chore.  And yes women in that age group prefer leaner and not "perma bulkers"

I'm no perma bulker. I dont even want to have the bulky kind of body that most guys are going for these days. I look more to the 70's era bodybuilders for the kind of body I like to have. But right now I would like to gain some more muscle mass.

This winter has been hellishly cold and I am living in some weird fucked up place in a strange country. So this winter I was in hibernation mode gaining weight. But now that spring is here i'm gonna take the bicycle out and get lean and fit, i'll probably get back into long distance bicycling. I used to take the bicycle out all day long and just ride miles and miles, it would probably be smart for me to get back into that.

I'll see how things go, maybe i'll diet down too when summer gets here to really take off the fat. I definitely don't want to look in the mirror one day and realize i've gotten straight up chubby.

I got so used to training and eating a certain way, it's strange to now have to change it all up. It's like I need to learn my body all over again.

this change is very gradual, then one day when you are on vacation you will observe that all of the young girls are checking out the leaner guys.  While the old hags with 3 kids and saggy tits are checking you out. That is when you look down and notice that you have a layer of fat covering the abs and your pecs look like breasts.

lol, but in a tank top or tshirt you are king

Personally I believe you can be a mix of those, Ecto-Meso, Endo-Meso etc etc   It depends on so many factors, and YES I believe you can alter them!

I was a super skinny growing up. the freaking wind could blow me over.  But I've been training for almost 10 years now, now I weigh about 230 lbs.   I've been as high as 265 lbs!

Why do you think that? I think it makes a huge difference on how a person should eat and train and how their body will react. If they are training naturally that is.

My best friend is a fat endomorph and i'm and thin ectomorph. We used to eat, sleep and train the same way and our bodies reacted totally differently. I think just casually observing people can show that there's something to it.

because it changes overtime

I was super skinny a few years ago when I could eat anything and not get fat and now I am a fat fuck and need to check what I eat

it all depends on your metabolism and activity

many 'hardainers' just eat too little and train in stupid way,,

ratio of calories going to muscle mass vs fat gain hasnt changed for you,, you simply created enough caloric surplus to facilitate growth,, (>>eating more, activity level down and maybe slight 'slowing down')

yes definately that categorization is pretty dumb,, genetics are very important but so many train and eat in stupid fashion,.,.,
