Imagine if there was a conspiracy between the IFBB and food companies :-X For example, the food companies pay the IFBB to say that high protein leads to bigger muscles. Big Brother is watching. Its all a conspiracy.  :o :o :o

Pretty sure the nutritionist/guru George Farah has made substantial gains on low protein. I believe his reasoning was the loss of a kidney. Bill Pearl and many others (including myself) have made great gains on low protein.

A pregnant woman needs more protein than a bodybuilder... so does someone who is healing a broken bone, or a burn victim.

This 'high-protein' garbage has always been fed by $$$$$ supplement companies, not scientific studies and resultant proof.

All "high protein" does is gives some Pro BB an excuse for why he blew up 40 lbs in a year. If everyone told the truth about supplements and supplementation, there would be no BB magazines to whack off to. (fking homo)

No more than you can show me proof of a single successful competitive bodybuilder (doesn't need to be a pro) that only takes in the RDA of protein each day, which currently is 0.8 grams per kg of bodyweight.

Thanks in advance.

you made a statement of fact. i did not.

back it up or stfu.

simple concept.

you're welcome.

is it just meat sources or protein in general, because you can combine different beans and what not to get a complete source

when bulking, i just eat 40 Yoplait Light yogurts everyday. 200 grams of protein (160 grams are from Casein Isolate, 40 grams are from Whey Isolate), 800 grams of low glycemic glucose based carbs. Zero fat. (zero fat on the label although zero fat is impossible and its probably like .5gram fat per yogurt so in realit fat total will be somethign like 15-25grams.) tons of probiotics for digestion. lots of calcium.

would it matter if we could absorb more than 50 grams?

what matters is not how much the body can absorb, its how much do we need to eat to allow our bodies to grow as fast as possible

our bodies can absorb 100 grams of protein in one meal. it can absorb 200 grams in one meal.

but how much do we need to eat to maximize growth?

bigJ's advice of 30grams every 3 hours is more than enough protein. if you followed the high end of his spectrum, which would be 50 grams every two hours, you would be drastically over consuming protien.

Not necessarily. Lets say you have 8 hours sleep a night - that leaves 16 hours in which to have your daily protein intake. There leaves 8 or 9 opportunities to have protein every two hours (depending of course when you have breakfast or supper last thing at night) - Even at worst case scenario that's 450 grams of protein a day.

I can only speak for myself but I have achieved better gains on 400+ grams a day than I was when I take 200-300 grams a day. Obviously you reach a point of diminishing returns where the body can only absorb so much and the rest becomes waste, but look at the biggest bodybuilders in the world - they're all easily taking in 400-500 grams a day plus. I'm pretty sure you couldn't get to Jay Cutler's size on 200 grams a day.

My reasoning is - take in as much as your body can absorb without getting fat - don't just try and get away with the minimum you can get away with - how do you know your limits until you exceed them?

Vince Goodrum has made solid gains with low protein intake,  he takes all his protein in below his waist through his hind quarters.

poor Vinny....he can't buy a trick

I agree with that completely. Most guys are more interested in the bare minimum amount, because protein is expensive and not always pleasant to eat, especially if your trying to keep them low fat and dont have alot of money.

Also, if you can eat less protein, it means you can eat more calories from some other food, namely carbs. and any increase in carbs will increase muscle growth and retention.

I don't know about making substanital gains on a low-protein diet but I haven't ate over 150 grams of protein daily in 5 years. I still train like a bodybuilder but my diet consists of whatever I want to eat now, my days of carrying around a shaker bottle are over. I still eat over 100 grams daily from food and feel that's enough to maintain my body.

Interesting. I've lowered my protein intake and get weaker as a results. Protein is muscle and vice versa. You have to have optimal amounts to grow -- bottom line
