Keith Olbermann's Father Dies
« on: March 13, 2010, 07:29:06 PM »
He spent a lot of the past 3 years visiting him and sharing it with viewers.  Last night he had a big section on living wills.

Theodore C. Olbermann, 1929-2010
My father died, in the city of his birth, New York, at 3:50 EST this afternoon.

Though the financial constraints of his youth made college infeasible, he accomplished the near-impossible, becoming an architect licensed in 40 states. Much of his work was commercial, for a series of shoe store chains and department stores. There was a time in the 1970's when nearly all of the Baskin-Robbins outlets in the country had been built to his design, and under his direction. Through much of my youth and my early adult life, it was almost impossible to be anywhere in this country and not be a short drive to one of "his" stores.

My Dad was predeceased last year by my mother, Marie, his wife of nearly 60 years. He died peacefully after a long fight against the complications that ensued after successful colon surgery last September at the New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center. My sister Jenna and I were at his side, and I was reading him his favorite James Thurber short stories, as he left us.

Sad news indeed.  By the sounds of it Olbermann has handled it with class and dignity.  Great man for having the strength to read to his father on his deathbed.

Its sad his father died but give me a break. Everyone on this board has been deathbed with a loved one at some point or another. Reading to his father hardly makes him a "great man."

To me it does.  It takes a lot of strength and i applaud such an action.

Many parents are not lucky enough to pass while their kids are besides them.  Many kids are not lucky enough to see their parents one last time before they pass.

(Due to distance, last minute circumstance, little time, feuds, etc....)

Nothing wrong with his actions.

Exactly.  In today's society where you can dismiss your parents to some nursing home to be cared for by strangers, it's nice to still see an attachment to ones parents.  America is a society of hypocrisy.

Does anyone know what the complications were?
