Henderson/Shields fight
« on: April 18, 2010, 02:07:44 PM »
I feel like Dan Henderson's back injury must have played a big part in him losing last night b/c that fight was fucking boring.  I was not impressed with Shields at all.  He would get Hendo to the ground and his punches were so fucking weak and wimpy, it was annoying to watch.  I think if Hendo was healthy he would have killed him.  Shields seems like he has no power at all.

Plus I think he over-reacted after the fight when he pushed Mayhem for asking for a re-match.  I think Mayhem was just clowning with him and trying to get a little rivalry going.  No need for the post-fight fight.  Pretty boring card last night overall, really.  I hope Strikeforce comes up with something better than this in the future.  That was a lame card, man.

I sorta see what you are saying bro -BUT ... Hendo looked too one dimensional last night- he was just stalking, looking to land that big bomb, reminded me of Liddell, Shields has no where near the striking power of Hendo, but Hendo was like a turtle on his back last night. Being 39 didn't help either, if Hendo was 31 like Shields then I think Hendo takes it. Hendo is a dinosaur, he has not evolved, plus father time waits for no man. Put Hendo against Bones Jones -the view of the future - and Hendo doesn't make it out of the first round. I think Hendo took the fight too lightly, his age, cutting a lot of weight, it all added up and tilted the scales to Shields.
Hendo could walk into any bar anywhere and whip the whole house, no doubt about it, but not in the cage anymore against the top guys, he just looks too one dimensional, not enough of an all around skill set to win a belt anymore.

hendo looked very stiff. But His right hand in the 1st round caused more damage than 20 of shield's little ground and pound

I'm a big time Dan follower.

Hendo looked "soft". Noticeable bodyfat gain as soon as I saw him. Someone mention back injury earlier...could be possibility. He was out there to head hunt obviously and get it over with.

I saw no greco roman style takedowns when he had him on the cage backed up, and Dan was taken down pretty easily at times which is absolutely unheard of imo.

No explosiveness at all. Didn't try anything with his hips when he was mounted full. We'll never know b/c Dan won't make any excuses...but I saw no explosiveness in Dan at all on saturday. Was sad to watch.

...as far as jake sheilds......lmao.

Dan lost that fight, Shields didn't win it. Hendo was definetly not 100% and looked stiff as a board. Maybe it was the cut to 185, maybe it was his back injury or maybe he just got old overnight-- either way he looked like shit.

Shields is soft as as a marshmellow. If a decent featherweight would have had Hendo mounted like that, it would have been a TKO in the third round instead of a 5 round decision.

Definitely.

Hendo shoulda put him away in that first round.  Looks like he gassed perhaps..   Shields didn't impress me at all.  Not in the slightest.  I can't wait for him to get picked apart as average in the UFC

The sudden weight cut in two days made him tired.  Shields didn't want to lose position going for an arm lock and held the mount.  It is Dan's responsibility to get out of the mount, he didn't.

No, it's the champs responsibility to finish the damn fight instead of landing love taps while in the mount for 3 rounds in a row. You want to talk about playing it safe, there's safe and theres absurdity-- It was either Shields ineptitude as a striker or overall pussiness that caused the fight to drag on to a 5 round conclusion.

Hendo's pattented mount escape is "giving up the arm" and exploding and scrambling.  Shields wasn't about to sacrafice position to try an armlock from the mount.  If you want to beat the champ, you better not let it go to a decision or you'd better prevent yourself from being mounted for four rounds.

I don't buy that argument at all. It's like saying that Anderson Silva is a counter puncher so rather than take any damage he waited for Maia to come to him instead of finishing the fight at will. It was obvious from round 2 on that Henderson was gassed, couldn't move his hips and outside of throwing haymakers had no significant offense at all. Shields played it safe and put on an absolute snooze fest as a result.
