Very popular back in the day.  Roy Callendar used to do a ton of these with 2) 150 lb dumbells hanging from his waist.

You are better off with a closer grip, palms up. The wider you go, the more you reduce the range of motion.

I always do mine with hands a bit past shoulder width, what extra benefit does doing them wide bring?

If you put your hand on your lat's and mimmick the action of a narrower grip vs the w-i-d-e grip you will see what is better for stimulation..to wide a grip limits range of motion and robs the lats of growth inducing contraction.

Arnold diddnt just do wide grip chins he did all grips.

As unsung says its just a tool like any other exercise.

If you do them to the rear, elbows-wide. To the front, pulling to the chin, you're ok.

True. But with his genetics he could have probably gotten away with not doing them.

he didn't do them due to insertion points, he argued that everyone gets a better lat stretch from close grip pull ups/downs.

what you did in the vid i wouldn't call wide grip chins. try this wide and see how it feels.
