Business Insider ^ | MARCH 27, 2010 | Calculated Risk

Posted on Sunday, March 28, 2010 12:27:11 PM by RobinMasters

Twenty-seven states recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 7 states and the District of Columbia registered rate decreases, and 16 states had no rate change, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the year, jobless rates increased in 46 states and the District of Columbia and declined in 4 states...

Michigan again recorded the highest unemployment rate among the states, 14.1 percent in February. The states with the next highest rates were Nevada, 13.2 percent; Rhode Island, 12.7 percent; California and South Carolina, 12.5 percent each; and Florida, 12.2 percent. North Dakota continued to register the lowest jobless rate, 4.1 percent in February, followed by Nebraska and South Dakota, 4.8 percent each. The rates in Florida and Nevada set new series highs, as did the rates in two other states: Georgia (10.5 percent) and North Carolina (11.2 percent).

No!  Beach, you werent around for the stim bill debates we had.    The Stim Bill was nothing more than a massive transfer of wealth from the middle class to the state govts to keep up their criminal level of spending and avoid the needed correction that the recession should have caused.

The stim bill was not about employment.  Check out this graph.  This is the promises of maobama vs reality.

240, where are you?

We are waiting for your thoughtful insight into this situation.

No, you can't answer with "it's Bush's fault" or "911 was an inside job".  You don't have evidence to prove either and 911 conspiracy theories is another subject.

Obama said unemployment would not go over 8% and it would save jobs.

So, please, educate us 240. What the hell is going on?

Wow, it's all about attacking the messenger, not the message huh?  I am currently getting called out in 4 different threads.  I would much prefer to talk about the issues without being attacked personally.  But if that's the style of the board, I'll respect that.  It quickly moves things to the point where posting is no fun.  Anyway...

"Unemployment Rose In 27 States In February"

Okay.  let's look at that number.  Since unemployment cannot be 'flat' - You're always going to either be gaining or losing, there is no state where there is the EXACT number of jobs each month.

So if unemployment ROSE in 27 states in Feb, that means it DROPPED in 23 states in February.

'What is it remained the same in some states?'

That would be statistically near impossible, 333386.  You're telling me in a state like Cali, with 37 million people, there would be EXACTLY the same number of jobs from one month to the next?  Your premise is an outlier, and without proof, does not exist.

So let's look at my point and address it without "240 you suck you moran [sic]".  If unemployment rose in 54% of the states, and dropped in 46% of the states, is that really a bad thing?  In a completely stable economy, with minimal to miniscule growth or shrinkage in any given month, it would be 50%/50%.

So yes, Obama only managed to foster growth in 46% of states, instead of 50% as would be the average.  Yes, he sucks.

Unemployment tops 20% in eight California counties

The state's jobless rate of 12.5% in January was its worst on record and fifth-highest in the nation.
By Alana Semuels

For many California areas, unemployment rates moved persistently higher in January, indicating that the national economic recovery hasn't yet translated into jobs for the Golden State. New county-by-county figures released by the state Wednesday showed that in eight counties, more than 1 in 5 people were out of work. Moreover, revised numbers for last year show that fewer people were employed than was previously believed.

The state was one of five, along with Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, that reached their highest unemployment rates since the government began keeping track in 1976, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. California's was 12.5% in January, up from 12.3% in December. "The unemployment rate will be persistently at this high level for at least a few more months," said Esmael Adibi, an economist at Chapman University in Orange.

The unemployment rate for the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metro area reached 15% in January, its highest since 1990, the earliest year for which the state has comparable data available. Unemployment in Orange County reached 10.1%, up from 9.1% in December. The state's revised data for last year showing elevated unemployment indicate that a recovery could take longer than previously predicted. "The impact on the labor market was much more severe than what we had estimated," Adibi said. Most counties were still struggling under the burden of joblessness, especially the eight counties where rates were higher than 20%. Merced County, for instance, had an unemployment rate of 21.7% in January, and Imperial County's rate was 27.3%.

The national unemployment rate in January was 9.7%, and the country experienced a strong 5.75% annualized increase in gross domestic product in last year's final three months. "The real mystery now is why we aren't getting job growth when the GDP has been positive," said Stephen Levy, director of the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy. Budget problems in state and local government are expected to further drag down the state's recovery, Levy said. Even if they don't get pink slips, state employees are earning less money because of furloughs and salary reductions, which reduces consumer spending in the state...

George Bush had 54 consecutive months of job growth.Reagan had a job growth of 30 million.Obama loses jobs every month WITH a 700 billion dollar stimulus plan and you praise him.Thats why when you say your libertarian or conservative we laugh.NO LIBERTARIAN or conservative would praise the massive job losses that have occured BECAUSE of Obama.

Ha Ha.   Calm down.  240 - you and i both know that July 2010 is drawing near and that you are going to owe me a huge "I have egg on my face for supporting the stim bill" when UE is still around 10%, regardless of the manipulations by the govt.

If everything is headed in the right direction and a recovery is 'full steam ahead'...why did 27 states report U.E. increases? Why are many states on the brink of BK? Why does the Fed continue to let the banks borrow trillions of printed money at around 0% interest? Why is TARP being pushed to be permanent? Why is Mark to Market still being suspended? Why does the govt. need to extend the housing tax credit bribe and even offer a new $6500 dollar bride along with it? Why is the U.E. rate still at about 10%? Why does the Fed and the Admin. tell us that the economy is in a "recovery" phase for quite some time, yet the Fed still needs to keep drowning the nation/world in liquidity and has no plans to raise rates any time soon?

These questions are rhetorical, but knock yourself out.

Because the govt is lying to people and know that people like Mons, 240, Blacken Straw, and Benny will believe the smoothe lies of Obama over cold hard fact.
